Having spent a couple of years living in India and performing around the country, I developed a large repertoire of Bollywood music. I love it when I have the opportunity to perform it, and this evening called for several hours’ worth!
Kajal held her Mehndi party on a Thursday evening at a family member’s home in Venetia, Pennsylvania. We were just a bit south of Pittsburgh, right in the middle of the severe weather that passed through that night! Fortunately, the party was able to continue as planned.
I was set up inside the home, where the bride-to-be arrived with her family to the sound of the drums. Outside, there was food served and a large tent for dinner and dancing. Inside, I played as the bride and guests had henna applied.
The music included the bride’s special requests of “A Thousand Years” from Twilight: Breaking Dawn, “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and “A Whole New World” from Aladdin. Her Bollywood song requests were “Jashne Bahara,” which was her proposal song, “Pehli nazar mein,” and “Pee Loon.”
With several more hours of music required, I got through most (but still not all!) of the Bollywood hits I play, from “Kal ho naa ho” to “Chura Liya Hai” to “Shayad.” Something guests of every generation would recognize!
