My career as a harpist has taken me all over the world, this time to Phnom Penh, Cambodia! My Lyon & Healy Silhouette electric harp made the trip with me, playing for a wedding reception at the OCIC Wedding Hall.
This beautiful silver harp can plug into my own or any sound system in place at your venue, and is extremely portable. For this wedding, I moved the harp around the room between sets. Connected to a wireless transmitter, the harp and I can go anywhere!
The wedding reception was held on an April evening, and the room was filled to the ceiling with flowers. The lights bathed the room (and the harp) in different colors, and the silver of the harp reflected them beautifully! All of the changes made the room feel like a different space each time.
Guests entered the hall via a hall lined with flowers. Inside, the room was decorated to represent a Grecian garden, with tulips, hydrangeas, roses, and greenery creating two backdrops on each side of the space, winding down the center of each long table and up columns to the ceiling. It was a visual spectacle!
The music added to the luxurious ambiance. My harp was the only harp in the entire country of Cambodia! I love introducing people around the world to this instrument. I played as guests entered the hall, serenading them with a variety of contemporary love songs.
I alternated with a traditional Khmer orchestra, consisting of strings, winds, piano, and percussion. They had vocalists for most of their selections, singing in both English and Khmer. We played back and forth as guests were served dinner.
The entrance of the bride was accompanied by harp music. She requested “Conversations in the Dark,” the 2020 release by John Legend, as she walked across the hall to her groom. I played until they were ready to cut the massive cake – it needed a sword!
