A beautiful Baroque piece by J. S. Bach, Arioso is one of my favorite pieces to include in a wedding prelude. It is also a good choice for mid-ceremony music, such as lighting of the unity candle or communion.

Ave Maria by J.S. Bach & Gounod

Charles-François Gounod added a melody to J.S. Bach’s well-known “Prelude in C” to create this setting of “Ave Maria.” While not as commonly-used as the Schubert below, it is a beautiful alternative.

Ave Maria by Franz Schubert

A well-loved classical and sacred favorite, I have played this piece for dozens of Catholic weddings. While most frequently used to accompany the presentation of roses to Mary, I have also had brides request it for their processional or as a way to bring some of the Catholic heritage of one member of the couple into an otherwise non-Catholic wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride)

The most traditional of wedding music, this piece by Richard Wagner is requested for the bridal processional by approximately half of the couples with whom I work. With a fanfare to announce the bride’s entrance, this piece is a majestic way to begin the wedding ceremony.

Bridal March from Skjevik (Brudemarsj fra Skjevik)

An alternative to the traditional “Bridal Chorus,” this piece by the Norwegian composer Trond Ottar Maalen can be used for the bridal processional or the wedding party processional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Pachelbel’s “Canon in D”

One of the most-requested wedding songs, “Canon in D” by Johann Pachelbel is perfect for any wedding processional – the seating of family members, the wedding party, or the bride. This piece can be lengthened or shortened to accommodate any size of wedding party. I have also had couples choose this piece for all processionals, having me reserve the faster, more majestic section for the grand entrance.

Chaconne from “The Fairy-Queen”

A 1692 opera by the English composer Henry Purcell, “The Fairy-Queen” is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” This chaconne makes a stately processional for the wedding party or bride.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

David’s Aria from “Saul” (Oh Lord, whose mercies numberless)

Composed by G. F. Handel in 1738, David’s “Aria” is part of a larger oratorio concerning the life of Saul. This air is appropriate for preludes, memorials, and church services.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Dodon’s Sleep

A soft and gentle piece by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, it is part of a larger work called The Golden Cockerel Suite. This style of music is perfect for moments of reflection in a wedding, church service, or memorial service. As a lullaby, it is also appropriate for a baptism or christening.

Finale from “Music for the Royal Fireworks”

Commissioned by Britain’s King George II, this piece was performed in 1749 to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle.  Originally scored for wind instruments, there have been multiple transcriptions for other ensembles, including this one for harp and cello.  This version was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

Great Day by Nancy Gustavson

A piece that truly shows off the harp! Full of glissandos, special effects, and pedal changes, no other instrument can create the sounds that this piece brings out of the harp. It makes for an exciting recessional, postlude music for guest dismissal, or reception music.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Hornpipe from “Water Music”

G.F. Handel composed a set of orchestral suites at the behest of King George I, who wanted a concert performed on the River Thames in London. This “Hornpipe” appears in the second of three suites. It makes an excellent grand entrance or recessional during a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal or lever harp.

Hornpipe in G Major

This Baroque dance by Henry Purcell makes a stately choice for a bridal or wedding party processional when you prefer classical but non-traditional music. It also can be played a bit more up-tempo for a recessional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring

One of J. S. Bach’s best-loved compositions, and the final movement of his Cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), this piece is very popular for wedding ceremonies.

Played at a moderate tempo, it works well for a processional (and pairs nicely with Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” if that piece will also be part of your entrance music). Slightly faster, it becomes a lively recessional, sending the newly-married couple joyfully off to the reception. It is also frequently played during the Christmas season.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp. A version of this song recorded with a harp and marimba duet is also available. The duet and trio versions below were recorded live at wedding ceremonies.

King William’s March

This piece was written by the English Baroque composer Jeremiah Clarke in honor of William of Orange, who had become King of England during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. This piece works well as a processional (for the wedding party or bride), as a recessional, or as part of the postlude.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

La Gimblette

This theme and variations was written by the French harp composer Bernard Andres. I often play it in its entirety as background music for wedding receptions or the ceremony prelude, but you can also choose among the different variations for your processionals or the recessional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Largo from Concerto in D for Guitar

Vivaldi originally wrote this piece for lute, but it is now primarily performed on the guitar. This harp transcription of the Largo (the second movement) has a tranquil and gentle melody that makes it a wonderful choice for mid-ceremony rituals, such as the sand ceremony or unity candle. It also works well during the prelude of a wedding ceremony or as background music when classical themes are requested.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

It is a beautiful classical piece that can work as a wedding processional, prelude, or interlude, or as background music for other events.

Thais is an 1894 opera by the French Romantic composer Jules Massenet. This “Meditation” was originally written for solo violin and orchestra, but the solo harp transcription is beautiful. Pavane Style Renaissance

A pavane is a slow and stately couples dance that was popular in Europe during the 1500s. This one, in a “Renaissance Style,” was composed by Paul Wachs and is a wonderful choice for a wedding processional or recessional when you would like to have classical music, but not the traditional wedding pieces.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Prelude in C by J. S. Bach

This piece by the Baroque composer J. S. Bach is the first prelude in his book The Well-Tempered Clavier. Although originally written for a keyboard instrument, the arpeggiated chords are idiomatic to the harp, and the piece makes a beautiful harp solo.

The Bach-Gounod “Ave Maria” sets the Latin text to a melody superimposed over this prelude. It is a favorite for weddings (especially Catholic Nuptial Masses), religious services, and funerals.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Processional by Linda Wood

This piece was composed by a harpist, so it sounds especially lovely on the instrument! It has four sections or variations, and you can choose among them for your wedding. Any or all of them work well for a wedding party or bridal processional, and the final variation can be a recessional.

Third Movement of Spring from “The Four Seasons”

The Four Seasons were written as a set of four violin concerti, each representing one of the seasons, by Antonio Vivaldi. Each concerto consisted of three movements (fast-slow-fast). This is the final movement of Spring, and it has a dance-like lilt that makes it a wonderful choice for a wedding processional.

Her graceful presence and beautiful music was astonishing!  The music filled the park like a symphony, and the timing of all the songs were perfect!  My only regret is that we did not have a video camera dedicated solely for her performance.  We cannot express our appreciation and admiration for Devon enough!  Thank You so much!!!!!”

“Devon, You did a beautiful job at our wedding on Saturday!  Things got switched around on us at the last minute (no one told us they didn’t close the Conservatory to the public during our wedding and we would only get a small chunk of it!), attendants missed their cues, etc, but your music made it so special, it all went off as though perfectly planned.  I’m glad you decided to play during the ceremony, it helped offset the noise in the background!  It was a magical day overall, and I wish I’d had a chance to thank you at the time, and tell you how much we appreciated your contribution.  Here’s a great picture of you, I may send more if we get more from another camera, this is just the best one from ours.  Thanks again, we will recommend you to anyone we know that’s in need of a fantastic musician!”

“Thank you.  Your pictures are beautiful and I must say Ireland looks very very pretty in the old farmhouse on the hill.  We have lived here for so many years and have had violins, trumpets, piano, cello, sax, drums…….maybe just never ever an instrument or a musician with such magic. The children were mesmerized by you and many parents commented ‘Maybe I need to get a harp to put them to sleep at nite’!  Sweetly, perched above the mantle just beside your harp is the oil of my mother.  Nice to see my mother front and center with Ireland as she died three years ago and I know she too enjoyed the spot you chose!  The picture melted my heart to see her there! Thank you.  If you need further reference, ever, please do not hesitate to contact me.”

She arrived at the courthouse in good time, so my stress was lightened. I appreciated that. In addition to playing with the flautist, Devon accompanied me on “The Lord’s Prayer”. We had met together earlier to rehearse at her home. It was a joy to work with someone who really knows what she is doing. Overall, a positive experience. You won’t go wrong hiring Devon Carpenter.”

“Arthur and I were married this past June 30th at an apple orchard in NW Indiana. We hired Devon to play the music at our ceremony. She was very easy to work with as we planned for our big day. We had no problem picking our music choices form her huge list of offerings. On the day of our wedding, I did not have to worry about a thing. She found the ceremony site and set up with no problem. All I remember is hearing her BEAUTIFUL music; that is totally how it SHOULD be!! What an AMAZING addition to our ceremony! Thank you Devon for such lovely music and being a part of our PERFECT day!!”

Josie

Bride

“Thank you so much for playing at our wedding. You played beautifully! Everyone was blown away by how wonderful the music was, including Martin and myself. Thanks again!”

Jacquee

“Devon is an amazingly talented harpist! She was extremely easy to work with. We had a couple of conversations with her over the phone and never even met her until the day of! But her website was extremely helpful. It offered a lot sample clips of her music! My guests loved the special touch of having a harpist at the ceremony and the cocktail hour. She’s prompt, professional, prepared, self-sufficient, pretty, and musically amazing! Being that I was planning a destination wedding, having trust-worthy, professional vendors is KEY!”

Laura

Bride

I am so happy that I chose Devon to be my harpist at my Sept 1st wedding. Everyone at my wedding raved at how beautiful she sounded and what a nice touch it was. She was very willing to work with me as well since my wedding was outside and it rained up until we had to be there. If I ever have the chance to use her again I most definitely will!!”

Christina

Bride

“I just wanted thank you for the beautiful music you provided during the ceremony. It was every bit as beautiful as we could have hoped for. I just wanted to let you know how pleased we were and how beautifully you played the harp. I would certainly recommend you to anybody who needs a harpist. Thank you again, Devon!”

Barbara

Mother of the Bride

“Devon was amazing! She is so incredibly talented and really helped to set such a classy tone at our wedding reception at Notre Dame SDH. Her music is so beautiful, and exactly what you’d want from a harpist – soft enough that it doesn’t distract, but vibrant enough to affect the mood. She also gets extra points for letting the brand new wifey, who used to play the harp, pose for a few pictures and play a bit of music herself!

She’s so professional, doesn’t pressure you in any way to hire her on the spot, and she responds really quickly to emails, a huge plus if you’re planning a wedding from the west coast like we were!

We have to admit, having a harpist at our reception was one of the things we thought we only wanted a little bit, and almost didn’t pull the trigger on, but Devon had such great reviews and was so easy to communicate with that we were convinced. We’d like to put our two cents in as another positive review to convince anyone else on the fence to DO IT! Definitely one of the best, and classiest decisions we made for our wedding.”

Johanna

“Devon Carpenter was the perfect ceremony musician for our wedding at the Jewel Box in St. Louis. I cannot recommend her enough! Brides: do yourself a favor and hire Devon! Throughout the planning process, Devon was super easy to work with and accommodated all of my requests. I asked for a Disney piece (Part of Your World) to be played as I walked down the aisle, and she played it perfectly; it was subtle and wedding-appropriate! She was also proactive in the planning process, which was helpful when there are so many vendors to coordinate. She is clearly very practiced in the wedding arena, as she has an organized information sheet to make sure everything is in order (which songs coordinate with which parts of the wedding party and ceremony). We never had a rehearsal despite having a large wedding party, but you would have never known it by the way Devon kept everything running smoothly! Devon was the first person at the ceremony, and one of the last to leave. The music was wonderful, her harp was beautiful, and she was so kind. Thank you, Devon, for creating the perfect atmosphere for our wedding! We love you!”

Amber

Bride

“Thank you for your gift of playing the harp. Your talent was perfect and greatly enjoyed throughout our wedding ceremony in Lake Geneva. We look forward to referring you to friends and family and appreciate your organization and musical gift. Thank you!”

I feel like it just wouldn’t have worked with ANY other musical option… and you played all our crazy requests. Awaiting my big moment to walk down the aisle I heard them playing inside before the doors opened and it was a ‘pinch me’ moment, realizing…omg, that is my wedding! That is the harp and violin!
