Classical & Traditional Wedding Music

Air from “Festes de l’Ete” – deMonteclair

Air from “Festes de l’ete”

A French classical piece from the Baroque period, this piece works well during a wedding ceremony prelude or as background music for events where classical themes are preferred.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Air from “Water Music”

Recorded live at a wedding ceremony, this piece from G.F. Handel’s Water Music is often used for prelude as guests are being seated, or as a processional for the wedding party. The clips below were recorded live at weddings, and feature solo harp, along with a trio of harp, violin, and cello and harp and violin duet.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Andante from String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 29 “Rosamunde” by Franz Schubert

Harp, Violin, & Cello Trio, recorded live during a wedding prelude

Other options include groups with flute, viola, oboe, trumpet, guitar, piano, organ, marimba, string quartet, steel drums, or multiple harps.

Arioso

A beautiful Baroque piece by J. S. Bach, Arioso is one of my favorite pieces to include in a wedding prelude. It is also a good choice for mid-ceremony music, such as lighting of the unity candle or communion.

Ave Maria by Franz Schubert

A well-loved classical and sacred favorite, I have played this piece for dozens of Catholic weddings. While most frequently used to accompany the presentation of roses to Mary, I have also had brides request it for their processional or as a way to bring some of the Catholic heritage of one member of the couple into an otherwise non-Catholic wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

English Translation

Hail Mary, full of grace,
Mary, full of grace,
Mary, full of grace,
Hail, Hail, the Lord
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed,
Blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Thy womb, Jesus.
Hail Mary!

Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Pray, pray for us;
Pray for us sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death,
The hour of our death.
The hour, the hour of our death,
The hour of our death.
Hail Mary!

Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride)

The most traditional of wedding music, this piece by Richard Wagner is requested for the bridal processional by approximately half of the couples with whom I work. With a fanfare to announce the bride’s entrance, this piece is a majestic way to begin the wedding ceremony.

The harp, violin, & cello trio version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Bridal March from Skjevik (Brudemarsj fra Skjevik)

An alternative to the traditional “Bridal Chorus,” this piece by the Norwegian composer Trond Ottar Maalen can be used for the bridal processional or the wedding party processional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Pachelbel’s “Canon in D”

One of the most-requested wedding songs, “Canon in D” by Johann Pachelbel is perfect for any wedding processional – the seating of family members, the wedding party, or the bride. This piece can be lengthened or shortened to accommodate any size of wedding party. I have also had couples choose this piece for all processionals, having me reserve the faster, more majestic section for the grand entrance.

Cantique de Jean Racine

This piece is a harp adaptation of a work composed by Gabriel Faure for mixed choir and piano or ogran. I often include it in a wedding prelude or as background music for events when classical music is requested.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Chaconne from “The Fairy-Queen”

A 1692 opera by the English composer Henry Purcell, “The Fairy-Queen” is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” This chaconne makes a stately processional for the wedding party or bride.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

David’s Aria from “Saul” (Oh Lord, whose mercies numberless)

Composed by G. F. Handel in 1738, David’s “Aria” is part of a larger oratorio concerning the life of Saul. This air is appropriate for preludes, memorials, and church services.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Dodon’s Sleep

A soft and gentle piece by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, it is part of a larger work called The Golden Cockerel Suite. This style of music is perfect for moments of reflection in a wedding, church service, or memorial service. As a lullaby, it is also appropriate for a baptism or christening.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Great Day by Nancy Gustavson

A piece that truly shows off the harp! Full of glissandos, special effects, and pedal changes, no other instrument can create the sounds that this piece brings out of the harp. It makes for an exciting recessional, postlude music for guest dismissal, or reception music.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Hornpipe in G Major

This Baroque dance by Henry Purcell makes a stately choice for a bridal or wedding party processional when you prefer classical but non-traditional music. It also can be played a bit more up-tempo for a recessional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

How Beautiful by Twila Paris

All versions below recorded live during weddings.

This song is beautiful as purely instrumental music, but I can also accompany a singer of your choice (or one of my professional colleagues) performing this piece for your wedding ceremony. This song can be played with solo harp, with a singer, or with any other instrumental chamber ensemble.

Hymne by Vangelis

Vangelis is a Greek composer who writes ambiant, jazz, electronic, and orchestral music. His most famous works are the film scores for Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner, and this instrumental piece appeared on his album “Opera Sauvage.” It makes a beautiful processional for the families, wedding party, or bride, and is equally appropriate for a church service.

The trio version below was recorded live at a wedding.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring

One of J. S. Bach’s best-loved compositions, and the final movement of his Cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), this piece is very popular for wedding ceremonies.

Played at a moderate tempo, it works well for a processional (and pairs nicely with Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” if that piece will also be part of your entrance music). Slightly faster, it becomes a lively recessional, sending the newly-married couple joyfully off to the reception. It is also frequently played during the Christmas season.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp. A version of this song recorded with a harp and marimba duet is also available. The duet and trio versions below were recorded live at wedding ceremonies.

This version is a harp and marimba duet – a unique combination of instruments! A harp solo recording is also available.

Joyeuse

An upbeat and majestic piece by French composer Jean Phillippe Rameau (1683-1764), this version is performed by a two-harp duet. The work was originally written for harpsichord, and appears in the composer’s book Pièces de Clavessin.

This piece can be performed with a pedal harp duet.

Jupiter

“Jupiter” is one of the seven movements from Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite The Planets. The tune for this movement is also the basis of the hymn “I Vow to Thee, My Country,” which is an English patriotic song and “World in Union,” the theme for the Rugby World Cup.

King William’s March

This piece was written by the English Baroque composer Jeremiah Clarke in honor of William of Orange, who had become King of England during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. This piece works well as a processional (for the wedding party or bride), as a recessional, or as part of the postlude.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

La Gimblette

This theme and variations was written by the French harp composer Bernard Andres. I often play it in its entirety as background music for wedding receptions or the ceremony prelude, but you can also choose among the different variations for your processionals or the recessional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Largo from Concerto in D for Guitar

Vivaldi originally wrote this piece for lute, but it is now primarily performed on the guitar. This harp transcription of the Largo (the second movement) has a tranquil and gentle melody that makes it a wonderful choice for mid-ceremony rituals, such as the sand ceremony or unity candle. It also works well during the prelude of a wedding ceremony or as background music when classical themes are requested.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Largo from “Xerxes”

G. F. Handel’s Baroque opera Xerxes features this piece, also known as “Ombra mai fu,” as the opening aria. I can play this as a harp solo, to accompany a singer, or in a larger ensemble with other instrumentalists. It is a beautiful classical piece that can work as a wedding processional, prelude, or interlude, or as background music for other events.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

March in D Major

This piece is from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, and written for harpsichord. Although originally attributed to J.S. Bach, it is now believed to have been written by his son, C.P.E. Bach around 1730.

The duet version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp.

Meditation from Thais

Thais is an 1894 opera by the French Romantic composer Jules Massenet. This “Meditation” was originally written for solo violin and orchestra, but the solo harp transcription is beautiful. It makes a lovely and romantic wedding prelude, processional, or interlude. I also play it for church services and background music when classical themes are requested.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Ode to Joy

The theme from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the last one he composed, is part of the fourth movement and sung by vocal soloists and a chorus. The German lyrics are based on a 1785 poem by Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, with the text modified by Beethoven. The tune is also used for the hymn “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.”

The duet and trio versions below were recorded live at wedding ceremonies.

German Lyrics

O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!
Sondern laßt uns angenehmere anstimmen,
und freudenvollere.
Freude! Freude!
Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!

Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
Eines Freundes Freund zu sein;
Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
Mische seinen Jubel ein!

Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer’s nie gekonnt, der stehle
Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!
Freude trinken alle Wesen
An den Brüsten der Natur;
Alle Guten, alle Bösen
Folgen ihrer Rosenspur.

Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
Und der Cherub steht vor Gott.
Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
Durch des Himmels prächt’gen Plan,
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen.

Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, über’m Sternenzelt
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such’ ihn über’m Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muß er wohnen.

English Lyrics for “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee”

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee
God of glory, Lord of love
Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee
Op’ning to the Sun above
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness
drive the dark of doubt away
Giver of immortal gladness
fill us with the light of day

All Thy works with joy surround Thee
Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays
Stars and angels sing around Thee
center of unbroken praise
Field and forest, vale and mountain
Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea
chanting bird and flowing fountain
call us to rejoice in Thee

Thou art giving and forgiving
ever blessing, ever blest
well-spring of the joy of living
ocean-depth of happy rest
Thou the Father, Christ our Brother—
all who live in love are Thine
Teach us how to love each other
lift us to the Joy Divine

Mortals join the mighty chorus
which the morning stars began
Father-love is reigning o’er us
brother-love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward
victors in the midst of strife
joyful music lifts us sunward
in the triumph song of life

Pavane Style Renaissance

A pavane is a slow and stately couples dance that was popular in Europe during the 1500s. This one, in a “Renaissance Style,” was composed by Paul Wachs and is a wonderful choice for a wedding processional or recessional when you would like to have classical music, but not the traditional wedding pieces.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Prelude in C by J. S. Bach

This piece by the Baroque composer J. S. Bach is the first prelude in his book The Well-Tempered Clavier. Although originally written for a keyboard instrument, the arpeggiated chords are idiomatic to the harp, and the piece makes a beautiful harp solo.

The Bach-Gounod “Ave Maria” sets the Latin text to a melody superimposed over this prelude. It is a favorite for weddings (especially Catholic Nuptial Masses), religious services, and funerals.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Processional by Linda Wood

This piece was composed by a harpist, so it sounds especially lovely on the instrument! It has four sections or variations, and you can choose among them for your wedding. Any or all of them work well for a wedding party or bridal processional, and the final variation can be a recessional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Reverie by Grandjany

Marcel Grandjany was a French harpist and composer, living from 1891-1975. This simple but elegant piece is the first movement of his Trois petites pieces tres faciles for solo harp. It is suitable for the prelude or interlude of a wedding ceremony, or as background when classical music is requested.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Romanza

We do not know the composer of this piece, but it has two distinct sections – one minor and one major. It is beautiful as classical background music, or can be part of a wedding ceremony prelude.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Rondeau

This piece was written by the French Baroque composer Jean-Joseph Mouret, the first movement of his “Suite of Symphonies for Brass, Strings and Timpani No. 1.” It is well-known as the theme for the PBS series Masterpiece Theatre.

The duet and trio versions below were recorded live at wedding ceremonies.

Sheep May Safely Graze (Schafe koennen sichen weiden) by J. S. Bach

This piece is the most popular aria from Bach’s Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd (Hunting Cantata). Composed in 1713, it is his earliest surviving secular cantata. This piece makes a beautiful addition to a wedding ceremony prelude or as classical background music. I have also played it for seating of families and a bridal party processional during a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Spiegel im Spiegel (Mirror in the Mirror)

This piece is a minimalist tintannabular work by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Originally scored for piano and violin, this adaptation is for a harp and steel drum duet. The steel drums are best known as a calypso-style instrument, but they can also perform classical music.

Third Movement of Spring from “The Four Seasons”

The Four Seasons were written as a set of four violin concerti, each representing one of the seasons, by Antonio Vivaldi. Each concerto consisted of three movements (fast-slow-fast). This is the final movement of Spring, and it has a dance-like lilt that makes it a wonderful choice for a wedding processional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

St. Anthony Chorale

Written by the Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn, this is also the tune for the hymn “We Thy People Praise Thee.”

The duet version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp.

Harp & Violin duet

Lyrics

We, thy people, praise thee, praise thee,
God of every nation!
We, thy people, praise thee, praise thee,
Lord of Hosts eternal!
Days of wonder, days of beauty,
days of rapture filled with light
tell thy goodness, tell thy mercies,
tell thy glorious might.
We, thy people praise thee, praise thee,
praise thee evermore.

We, thy people, praise thee, praise thee,
God of every nation!
We, thy people, praise thee, praise thee,
Lord of Hosts eternal!
For thy belssings, for thy bounty,
joyful songs to thee we sing,
songs of glory, songs of triumph
to our God and King.
We, thy people praise thee, praise thee,
praise thee evermore.

The Call (Come My Way, My Truth, My Life)

One of the pieces in Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs, it is a setting of a poem by the Anglican priest George Herbert. This harp arrangement of the fourth movement solo is beautiful in a wedding ceremony or church service.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life:
such a way as gives us breath,
such a truth as ends all strife,
such a life as killeth death.

Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength:
such a light as shows a feast,
such a feast as mends in length,
such a strength as makes his guest.

Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:
such a joy as none can move,
such a love as none can part,
such a heart as joys in love.

The Swan (Le Cygne)

This piece is best known as a cello solo, but sounds beautiful with any instrumentation! It comes from The Carnival of the Animals, written by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns in 1886.

The trio version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony, for the bride’s processional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp.

Lyrics

When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do
Is take a look at you, then I’m not so blue
When you’re close to me, I can feel your heart beat
I can hear you breathing near my ear
Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love

Anytime you want to you can turn me onto
Anything you want to, anytime at all
When I kiss your lips, ooh I start to shiver
Can’t control the quivering inside
Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love, oh

When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do
Is take a look at you, then I’m not so blue
When I’m in your arms, nothing seems to matter
My whole world could shatter, I don’t care
Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love

We got a groovy kind of love

A Summer Place

A pop song from the 1960s from the movie of the same name, I often play this for wedding receptions and corporate or private parties.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

There’s a summer place
Where it may rain or storm
Yet I’m safe and warm
For within that summer place
Your arms reach out to me
And my heart is free from all care
For it knows

There are no gloomy skies
When seen through the eyes
Of those who are blessed with love

And the sweet secret of
A summer place
Is that it’s anywhere
When two people share
All their hopes
All their dreams
All their love

And the sweet secret of a summer place
Is that it’s anywhere
When two people share
All their hopes
All their dreams, all their love

In addition to this harp duo version, I also play this piece as a harp solo or in a duet or trio with other instruments (as in the recordings below, featuring a trio of harp, violin, and cello, and duets of harp and flute / harp and violin). These ensembles were recorded live at weddings.

Lyrics

Heart beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave
How can I love when I’m afraid to fall
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow
One step closer

I have died everyday, waiting for you
Darling, don’t be afraid,
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
What’s standing in front of me
Every breath, every hour has come to this
One step closer

I have died everyday, waiting for you
Darling, don’t be afraid,
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

And all along I believed, I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me,
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more
One step closer
One step closer

I have died everyday, waiting for you
Darling, don’t be afraid,
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

And all along I believed, I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me,
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

A Time for Us from “Romeo and Juliet”

This theme from Romeo and Juliet is appropriate for a wedding ceremony, reception, or rehearsal dinner. I also play it for other types of parties and events.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

A time for us some day there’ll be
When chains are torn by courage born of a love that’s free
A time when dreams so long denied
Can flourish as we unveil the love we now must hide

A time for us at last to see
A life worthwhile for you and me

And with our love through tears and thorns
We will endure as we pass surely through every storm
A time for us some day there’ll be a new world
A world of shining hope for you and me
For you and me

And with our love through tears and thorns
We will endure as we pass surely through every storm
A time for us some day there’ll be a new world
A world of shining hope for you and me

Lyrics

I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, Princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?

I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways, and under
On a magic carpet ride

A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we’re only dreaming

A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I’m way up here
It’s crystal clear
That now I’m in a whole new world with you

Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky

A whole new world!
Don’t you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath – it gets better
I’m like a shooting star
I’ve come so far
I can’t go back to where I used to be

A whole new world!
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment, red-letter

I’ll chase them anywhere
There’s time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

A whole new world
That’s where we’ll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

All I Ask of You from “Phantom of the Opera”

One of the best-known pieces from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Phantom of the Opera, this love duet is beautiful for wedding ceremonies, either as a harp solo or harp accompaniment for singers. I also frequently play it as background music during other types of events.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

No more talk of darkness,
Forget these wide-eyed fears;
I’m here, nothing can harm you,
My words will warm and calm you.

Let me be your freedom,
Let daylight dry your tears;
I’m here, with you, beside you,
To guard you and to guide you.

Say you love me every waking moment,
Turn my head with talk of summertime.
Say you need me with you now and always;
Promise me that all you say is true,
That’s all I ask of you.

Let me be your shelter,
Let me be your light;
You’re safe, no one will find you,
Your fears are far behind you.

All I want is freedom,
A world with no more night;
And you, always beside me,
To hold me and to hide me.

Then say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime;
Let me lead you from your solitude.
Say you need me with you, here beside you,
Anywhere you go, let me go too,
Christine, that’s all I ask of you

Say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime;
Say the word and I will follow you.

Share each day with me,
Each night, each morning.
Say you love me!
You know I do.

Anywhere you go, let me go to
Love me, that’s all I ask of you.

All My Loving

An up-tempo hit by the Beatles, this piece makes a nice wedding recessional. I also play it for corporate and private parties as background music.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you
Tomorrow I’ll miss you
Remember I’ll always be true
And then while I’m away
I’ll write home every day
And I’ll send all my loving to you

I’ll pretend that I’m kissing
The lips I am missing
And hope that my dreams will come true
And then while I’m away
I’ll write home every day
And I’ll send all my loving to you

All my loving I will send to you
All my loving, darling I’ll be true

Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you
Tomorrow I’ll miss you
Remember I’ll always be true
And then while I’m away
I’ll write home every day
And I’ll send all my loving to you

All my loving I will send to you
All my loving, darling I’ll be true
All my loving, all my loving ooh
All my loving I will send to you

Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
You’ve got my head spinning, no kidding, I can’t pin you down
What’s going on in that beautiful mind?
I’m on your magical mystery ride
And I’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but I’ll be alright

My head’s under water
But I’m breathing fine
You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind

‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh-oh

How many times do I have to tell you?
Even when you’re crying, you’re beautiful too
The world is beating you down, I’m around through every mood
You’re my downfall, you’re my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I can’t stop singing, it’s ringing, in my head for you

My head’s under water
But I’m breathing fine
You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind

‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh-oh
Give me all of you, oh

Cards on the table, we’re both showing hearts
Risking it all, though it’s hard

‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you

I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh-oh

Harp & Flute Duet

Lyrics

Every time our eyes meet
This feeling inside me
Is almost more than I can take
Baby, when you touch me
I can feel how much ya love me
And it just blows me away
I’ve never been this close to anyone or anything
I can hear your thoughts, I can see your dreams

I don’t know how you do what you do
I’m so in love with you
It just keeps gettin’ better
I wanna spend the rest of my life with you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do
Baby, I’m amazed by you

The smell of your skin
The taste of your kiss
The way you whisper in the dark
Your hair all around me
Baby, you surround me
You touch every place in my heart
Oh, it feels like the first time every time
I wanna spend the whole night in your eyes

I don’t know how you do what you do
I’m so in love with you
It just keeps gettin’ better
I wanna spend the rest of my life with you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do
Baby, I’m amazed by you

Every little thing that you do
I’m so in love with you
It just keeps gettin’ better
I wanna spend the rest of my life with you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do, oh
Every little thing that you do
Baby, I’m amazed by you

Ashokan Farewell

From the Ken Burns documentary The Civil War, this piece is both beautiful and serene. It makes a lovely addition to the prelude for a wedding ceremony or other events when background music should be soft and soothing.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Harp Solo

Harp & Violin Duet

Lyrics

At last
My love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

At last
The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you

I found a dream, that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known

You smiled, you smiled
Oh and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
for you are mine…

At Last

Autumn Leaves

A French song from the 1940’s, this song has become a jazz standard. It is particularly beautiful on the harp, and I often play it for wedding receptions and private parties.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

The falling leaves
Drift by the window
The autumn leaves
Of red and gold

I see your lips
The summer kisses
The sunburned hands
I used to hold

Since you went away
The days grow long
And soon I’ll hear
Old winter’s song

But I miss you most of all
My darling
When autumn leaves
Start to fall

Beautiful Dreamer by Stephen Foster

A popular song from the 1860s, composed by the American songwriter Stephen Foster, this piece has been heard in movies ranging from Gone with the Wind to Office Space. It works well as background music for wedding preludes, receptions, or other private/corporate parties.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,
Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee;
Sounds of the rude world, heard in the day,
Lull’d by the moonlight have all passed away!
Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
List while I woo thee with soft melody;
Gone are the cares of life’s busy throng,
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea,
Mermaids are chanting the wild lorelei;
Over the streamlet vapors are borne,
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.
Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
Even as the morn on the streamlet and sea;
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart,
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Blackbird

From the 1968 album “The Beatles,” this song draws on a musical theme by J.S. Bach that is freqently played by classical guitarists. The version for harp, violin, and cello trio below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp.

Lyrics

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.

Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.

Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

Bless the Broken Road

Harp Solo

Harp & Violin Duet

Lyrics

I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through

I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you
That every long lost dream lead me to where you are
Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms

This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you
Yes it did

I think about the years I spent just passing through
I’d like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You’ve been there you understand
It’s all part of a grander plan that is coming true

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
And others who broke my heart they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know it’s true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

And now I’m just rolling home
Into my lover’s arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

By the Light of the Silvery Moon

This Tin Pan Alley song was first published in 1908 and subsequently recorded by Fats Waller, Doris Day, Little Richard, and Etta James. Its up-tempo beat makes it a wonderful addition to a wedding reception or other party.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Place park, scene dark, silvery moon is shining through the trees;
Cast two, me, you, sound of kisses floating on the breeze.
Act one, begun. Dialogue, “Where would you like to spoon?”
My cue, with you, underneath the silvery moon.

By the light of the silvery moon,
I want to spoon, to my honey I’ll croon love’s tune,
Honeymoon keep a shining in June,
Your silvery beams will bring love dreams, we’ll be cuddling soon,
By the silvery moon.

Act two, scene new, roses blooming all around the place;
Cast three, you, me, Preacher with a solemn looking face.
Choir sings, bell rings, Preacher: “You are wed for evermore.”
Act two, all through, every night the same encore.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight

This song is from the 1994 Disney animated movie “The Lion King,” and was composed by Elton John. It makes a beautiful wedding party processional or addition the the prelude music prior to a wedding ceremony.

The version for harp & string quartet below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Harp & String Quartet

Lyrics

Can you feel the love tonight?
The peace the evening brings
The world, for once, in perfect harmony
With all its living things

So many things to tell her
But how to make her see
The truth about my past? Impossible!
She’d turn away from me

He’s holding back, he’s hiding
But what, I can’t decide
Why won’t he be the king I know he is
The king I see inside?

Can you feel the love tonight?
The peace the evening brings
The world, for once, in perfect harmony
With all its living things

Can you feel the love tonight?
You needn’t look too far
Stealing through the night’s uncertainties
Love is where they are

Candle on the Water

This song is from the 1977 Disney live action-animation movie “Pete’s Dragon.” The recordings below are both live from events.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Harp, Violin, & Cello Trio

Harp & Vocalist

Lyrics

I’ll be your candle on the water
My love for you will always burn
I know you’re lost and drifting
But the clouds are lifting
Don’t give up, you have somewhere to turn

I’ll be your candle on the water
‘Till every wave is warm and bright
My soul is there beside you
Let this candle guide you
Soon you’ll see a golden stream of light

A cold and friendless tide has found you
Don’t let the stormy darkness pull you down
I’ll paint a ray of hope around you
Circling in the air, lighted by a prayer

I’ll be your candle on the water
This flame inside of me will grow
Keep holding on, you’ll make it
Here’s my hand, so take it
Look for me reaching out to show
As sure as rivers flow
I’ll never let you go

Can’t Help Falling in Love

This pop ballad was made famous by Elvis Presley in the early 1960s and the British reggae band UB40 in the 1990s. Lyrics

Wise men say
Only fools rush in
But I can’t help falling in love with you

Shall I stay?
Would it be a sin
If I can’t help falling in love with you?

Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be

Take my hand,
Take my whole life, too
For I can’t help falling in love with you

Come Sail Away by Styx

Yes, I can play rock music on the harp! This ballad by Styx sounds surprisigly lovely on the instrument. I have had this song requested for wedding ceremonies, receptions, and parties of all kinds.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

I’m sailing away set an open course for the virgin sea
I’ve got to be free free to face the life that’s ahead of me
On board I’m the captain so climb aboard
We’ll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I’ll try oh Lord I’ll try to carry on

I look to the sea reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy some sad I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever so the story goes
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold
But we’ll try best that we can to carry on

A gathering of angels appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said
They said come sail away come sail away
Come sail away with me

I thought that they were angels but to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies
Singing, come sail away come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away come sail away
Come sail away with me

Concerning Hobbits

Composed by Howard Shore for the soundtrack of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. It features themes and musical motifs heard throughout the trilogy. The version for harp, violin, and cello trio below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp.

Dancing Queen

This 1976 hit by the Swedish band ABBA is a long-time staple at weddings. It makes an excellent up-tempo recessional to conclude the ceremony or as part of the background music for cocktails/dinner at the reception.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

The duet version below was recoreded live at a wedding ceremony.

Harp & Violin Duet

Lyrics

You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen

Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music’s high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You’re in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen

Edelweiss from “The Sound of Music”

One of the most popular songs by Rodgers & Hammerstein, it was also the last song that the pair wrote together. It features in the Broadway musical and the movie adaptation of The Sound of Music, and is often chosen for mid-ceremony music (such as lighting of the unity candle) or the seating of family members prior to the service. I also frequently play it as background music during parties and other social events.

The trio version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Harp Solo

Harp, Violin, & Cello Trio

Lyrics

Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Every morning you greet me
Small and white, clean and bright
You look happy to meet me

Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow
Bloom and grow forever
Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Bless my homeland forever

Eyes on Me from “Final Fantasy VIII”

Every year, I have a few couples who request music from Final Fantasy for their weddings. This piece was chosen for a bride’s processional, but it also makes lovely interlude music in the middle of the ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Whenever sang my songs
On the stage, on my own
Whenever said my words
Wishing they would be heard
I saw you smiling at me
Was it real, or just my fantasy?
You’d always be there in the corner
Of this tiny little bar

My last night here for you
Same old songs, just once more
My last night here with you?
Maybe yes, maybe no
I kind of liked it your way
How you shyly placed your eyes on me
Did you ever know
That I had mine on you?

Darling, so there you are
With that look on your face
As if you’re never hurt
As if you’re never down
Shall I be the one for you
Who pinches you softly but sure?
If frown is shown, then
I will know that you are no dreamer

So let me come to you
Close as I want to be
Close enough for me
To feel your heart beating fast
And stay there as I whisper
How I love your peaceful eyes on me
Did you ever know
That I had mine on you?

Darling, so share with me
Your love if you have enough
Your tears if you’re holding back
Or pain if that’s what it is
How can I let you know
I’m more than the dress and the voice
Just reach me out, then
You will know that you are not dreaming

Darling, so there you are
With that look on your face
As if you’re never hurt
As if you’re never down
Shall I be the one for you
Who pinches you softly but sure?
If frown is shown, then
I will know that you are no dreamer

This indie-rock song was composed and performed by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008. It makes a beautiful wedding party processional or music for family seating. I also frequently include it in the music I play during wedding receptions, corporate functions, rehearsal dinners, and other parties.

Lyrics

I don’t know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can’t react
And games that never amount
To more than they’re meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You’ll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can’t go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I’m painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It’s time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You’ll make it now

Falling slowly sing your melody
I’ll sing along

Lyrics

You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold

So she took her love for to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold

See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold

I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I’ve broken
But I swear in the days still left
We’ll walk in fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold

You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold

From this Moment On

This 1997 Shania Twain song is a favorite for weddings where the couple prefers something less traditional. The country pop style translates well to the harp, and I have played it for mid-ceremony interludes, as a processional, and as background music during wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners.

The harp and violin duet version below was recorded live at a wedding.

Lyrics

From this moment life has begun
From this moment you are the one
Right beside you is where I belong
From this moment on

From this moment, I have been blessed
I live only, for your happiness
And for your love, I give my last breath
From this moment on

I give my hand to you with all my heart
I can’t wait to live my life with you I can’t wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment, as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing, I wouldn’t give
From this moment on

You’re the reason I believe in love
And you’re the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just the two of us
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment, as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing, I wouldn’t give
From this moment, I will love you
As long as I live, from this moment on

Lyrics

Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing “Hallelujah”

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don’t even know the name
But if I did, well really, what’s it to you?
There’s a blaze of light in every word
It doesn’t matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
And it’s not a cry that you hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Harvest Moon

This 1992 song by Neil Young comes from his album of the same name. The version for harp and violin duet below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp.

Lyrics

Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin’
We could dream this night away

But there’s a full moon risin’
Let’s go dancin’ in the light
We know where the music’s playin’
Let’s go out and feel the night

Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon

When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart

But now it’s gettin’ late
And the moon is climbin’ high
I want to celebrate
See it shinin’ in your eye

Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon

Lyrics

Have I told you lately that I love you
Have I told you there’s no one else above you
Fill my heart with gladness
take away all my sadness
ease my troubles that’s what you do

For the morning sun in all it’s glory
greets the day with hope and comfort too
You fill my life with laughter
and somehow you make it better
ease my troubles that’s what you do

There’s a love that’s divine
and it’s yours and it’s mine like the sun
And at the end of the day
we should give thanks and pray
to the one, to the one

Have I told you lately that I love you
Have I told you there’s no one else above you
Fill my heart with gladness
take away all my sadness
ease my troubles that’s what you do

There’s a love that’s divine
and it’s yours and it’s mine like the sun
And at the end of the day

And have I told you lately that I love you
Have I told you there’s no one else above you
You fill my heart with gladness

fill my life with gladness
ease my troubles that’s what you do
Take away all my sadness

Lyrics

Here comes the sun, do, dun, do, do
Here comes the sun, and I say
It’s all right

Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here

Here comes the sun, do, dun, do, do
Here comes the sun, and I say
It’s all right

Little darling, the smile’s returning to their faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here

Here comes the sun, do, dun, do, do
Here comes the sun, and I say
It’s all right

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been clear

Here comes the sun, do, dun, do, do
Here comes the sun, and I say
It’s all right

Here comes the sun, do, dun, do, do
Here comes the sun
It’s all right

Lyrics

Hey, Jude, don’t make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

Hey, Jude, don’t be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better

And anytime you feel the pain,
Hey, Jude, refrain
Don’t carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it’s a fool
Who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder

Nah, nah nah, nah nah, nah nah, nah nah

Hey, Jude, don’t let me down
You have found her, now go and get her
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

So let it out and let it in,
Hey, Jude, begin
You’re waiting for someone to perform with
And don’t you know that it’s just you,
Hey, Jude, you’ll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder

Nah, nah nah, nah nah, nah nah, nah nah yeah

Hey, Jude, don’t make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her under your skin
Then you’ll begin to make it better, better, better, better, better… oh!

Nah, nah nah, nah nah, nah, nah, nah nah,
Hey, Jude

Lyrics

Let the bough break, let it come down crashing
Let the sun fade out to a dark sky
I can’t say I’d even notice it was absent
‘Cause I could live by the light in your eyes
Unfold before you
Would have strung together
The very first words of a lifelong love letter

Tell the world that we finally got it all right
I choose you
I will become yours and you will become mine
I choose you
I choose you
oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

There was a time when I would have believed them
If they told me, you could not come true
Just love’s illusion
But then you found me and everything changed
And I believe in something again
My whole heart will be yours forever
This is a beautiful start to a lifelong love letter

Tell the world that we finally got it all right
I choose you (I choose you, I do)
I will become yours and you will become mine
I choose you (I choose you, I do)

We are not perfect
We’ll learn from our mistakes
And as long as it takes
I will prove my love to you
I am not scared of the elements
I am under-prepared, but I am willing
And even better
I get to be the other half of you

Tell the world that we finally got it all right
I choose you, yeah (I choose you, I do)
I will become yours and you will become mine
I choose you (I choose you, I do)

Lyrics

I love how your eyes close whenever you kiss me
And when I’m away from you I love how you miss me
I love the way you always treat me tenderly
But, darling, most of all I love how you love me

I love how your heart beats whenever I hold you
I love how you think of me without being told to
I love the way your touch is always heavenly
But, darling, most of all I love how you love me

I love how you hug me
I love how you squeeze me, tease me, please me
Love, how you love me
I love how you love me

I’ll Be

Lyrics

The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful
Stop me and steal my breath
And emeralds from mountains thrust toward the sky
Never revealing their depth

And tell me that we belong together
And dress it up with the trappings of love
I’ll be captivated, I’ll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

And I’ll be your cryin’ shoulder
I’ll be love’s suicide
And I’ll be better when I’m older
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life

And rain falls angry on the tin roof
As we lie awake in my bed
And you’re my survival, you’re my livin’ proof
My love is alive and not dead

And tell me that we belong together
And dress it up with the trappings of love
I’ll be captivated, I’ll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

And I’ll be your cryin’ shoulder
I’ll be love’s suicide
And I’ll be better when I’m older
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life

And I dropped out, I burned up
I fought my way back from the dead
Tuned in and turned on
Remembered the thing that you, you said

And I’ll be your cryin’ shoulder
I’ll be love’s suicide
And I’ll be better when I’m older
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life
The greatest fan of your life

English Lyrics

Hold me close and hold me fast
The magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose
When you kiss me, Heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes

I see la vie en rose
When you press me to your heart
I’m in a world apart
A world where roses bloom
And when you speak
Angels sing from above

Every day words
Seem to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be
La vie en rose

I thought that love was just a word
They sang about in songs I heard
It took your kisses to reveal
That I was wrong, and love is real
Hold me close and hold me fast

The magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose
When you kiss me, Heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see la vie en rose

When you press me to your heart
I’m in a world apart
A world where roses bloom
And when you speak
Angels sing from above

Every day words
Seem to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be
La vie en rose

Lady

This song was written by Lionel Richie and first recorded by the country singer Kenny Rogers. I often play it for wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, corporate functions, and private parties.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Lady, I’m your knight in shining armor and I love you
You have made me what I am and I’m yours
My love, there’s so many ways I want to say I love you
Let me hold you in my arms forever more

You have gone and made me such a fool
I’m so lost in your love
And oh, girl we belong together
Won’t you believe in my song?

Lady, for so many years I thought I’d never find you
You have come into my life and, made me whole
Forever let me wake to see you each and every morning
Let me hear you whisper softly in my ear

In my eyes I see no one else but you
There’s no other love like our love
Oh yes, girl I’ll always want you near me
I’ve waited for you for so long

Oh, lady, your love’s the only love I need
And beside me is where I want you to be
‘Cause, my love, my love, there’s somethin’ I want you to know
You’re the love of my life, of my life, you’re my lady
You’re my lady

Whenever I’m alone with you
You make me feel like I am whole again

Whenever I’m alone with you
You make me feel like I am young again
Whenever I’m alone with you
You make me feel like I am fun again

However far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you

Whenever I’m alone with you
You make me feel like I am free again
Whenever I’m alone with you
You make me feel like I am clean again

However far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you

Lyrics

Forever can never be long enough for me
To feel like I’ve had long enough with you
Forget the world now, we won’t let them see
But there’s one thing left to do
Now that the weight has lifted
Love has surely shifted my way

Marry me
Today and every day
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say “Hello” in this cafe
Say you will
Say you will

Together can never be close enough for me
To feel like I am close enough to you
You wear white and I’ll wear out the words “I love you”
And you’re beautiful
Now that the wait is over
And love has finally shown her my way

Marry me
Today and every day
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say “Hello” in this cafe
Say you will
Say you will

Promise me
You’ll always be
Happy by my side
I promise to
Sing to you
When all the music dies

And marry me
Today and everyday
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say “Hello” in this cafe
Say you will
Say you will

Marry me

Memory from “Cats”

The most popular and well-known song from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1981 musical, Cats, it is sung by the character Grizabella. Elaine Paige originated the role on London’s West End, and the song has also been recorded by Barry Manilow and Barbra Streisand. I have played this for corporate and private parties for many occasions.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Every street lamp seems to beat
A fatalistic warning
Someone mutters and the street lamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn’t give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

Burnt out ends of smoky days
The still cold smell of morning
A street lamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning

Touch me,
It is so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me,
You’ll understand what happiness is
Look, a new day has begun

Lyrics

Moon river, wider than a mile
I’m crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you’re goin’, I’m goin’ your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There’s such a lot of world to see
We’re after the same rainbow’s end
Waitin’ ’round the bend
My huckleberry friend
Moon river and me

Lyrics

Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you, go on

Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you, go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
and my heart will go on and on

Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we’re gone

Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold you
In my life we’ll always go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

You’re here, there’s nothing I fear
And I know that my heart will go on
We’ll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart
and my heart will go on and on

My Own True Love (Tara’s Theme) from “Gone with the Wind”

Max Steiner composed the score for this epic movie, and this song opens the film and is heard as one of the main usical themes throughout. Words were added to the instrumental score later by lyricist Mack David. This piece makes a beautiful processional or stately recessional, and can also be part of the prelude or reception music.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

My own true love
My own true love
At last I’ve found you
My own true love

No lips but yours
No arms but yours
Will ever lead me
Through Heaven’s doors

I roamed the Earth
In search of this
I knew I’d know you
Know you by your kiss

And by your kiss
You’ve shown true love
I’m yours forever
My own true love

My own true love

Nothing Else Matters by Metallica

Yes, it’s heavy metal music on the harp! This song was released in 1992 by Metallica, and has been covered dozens of times by other musical groups. I have played this song for wedding ceremonies, receptions, corporate functions, and private parties.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don’t just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

I never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don’t just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No nothing else matters

Only Time by Enya

This song is one of the most popular written by the Irish singer Enya. Her new age music adapts especially well to the harp, and this piece is popular for wedding processionals, preludes, and mid-ceremony interludes.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

Who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows, only time
And who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose, only time

Who can say why your heart sighs
As your love flies, only time
And who can say why your heart cries
When your love lies, only time

Who can say when the roads meet
That love might be in your heart
And who can say when the day sleeps
If the night keeps all your heart
Night keeps all your heart

Who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose, only time
And who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows, only time

Who knows? Only time

Harp & Classical Vocalist (Israel Kamakawiwo’ole version)

Lyrics

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh, why can’t I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow.
Why, oh, why can’t I?

Lyrics

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it
I know they’re wrong wait and see

Someday we’ll find it,
the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

Who said that wishes would be heard and answered
when wished on the morning star?
Someone thought of that and someone believed it
And look what it’s done so far
What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing
and what do we think we might see?

Someday we’ll find it,
the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

All of us under its spell
We know that it’s probably magic
Have you been sleeping and have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors
The voice might be one and the same
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it
It’s something that I’m supposed to be

Someday we’ll find it,
the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me

Someday we’ll find it,
the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me

Send in the Clowns from “A Little Night Music”

This song was written by Stephen Sondheim for his 1973 Broadway musical A Little Night Music. Recordings by Frank Sinatra, Judy Collins, and Barbra Streisand made it popular outside of musical theatre circles. I have played this piece for receptions and parties for many occasions.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

Isn’t it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here, at last, on the ground
You in mid-air
Send in the clowns

Isn’t it bliss?
Don’t you approve?
One who keeps tearing around
One who can’t move
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns

Just when I’d stopped opening doors
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours
Making my entrance again with my usual flair
Sure of my lines
No one is there

Don’t you love farce?
My fault, I fear
I thought that you’d want what I want
Sorry, my dear
But where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns
Quick, send in the clowns

What a surprise!
Who could foresee?
I’d come to feel about you
What you felt about me
Why only now, when I see
That you’ve drifted away?
What a surprise
What a cliche

Isn’t it rich?
Isn’t it queer?
Losing my timing this late in my career
And where are the clowns?
Quick, send in the clowns

Don’t bother
They’re here

Lyrics

‘Cause you’re a sky, ’cause you’re a sky full of stars
I’m gonna give you my heart
‘Cause you’re a sky, ’cause you’re a sky full of stars
‘Cause you light up the path

I don’t care, go on and tear me apart
I don’t care if you do, ooh
‘Cause in a sky, ’cause in a sky full of stars
I think I saw you

‘Cause you’re a sky, ’cause you’re a sky full of stars
I wanna die in your arms
‘Cause you get lighter the more it gets dark
I’m gonna give you my heart

I don’t care, go on and tear me apart
I don’t care if you do, ooh
‘Cause in a sky, ’cause in a sky full of stars
I think I see you

‘Cause you’re a sky, you’re a sky full of stars
Such a heavenly view
You’re such a heavenly view.

Someone to Watch Over Me

This ballad was written by composer George Gershwin and lyricist Ira Gerswhin for the 1926 musical Oh, Kay! It featured prominently in the 1995 movie Mr. Holland’s Opus, and is often requested for wedding receptions and corporate events.

Lyrics

There’s a saying old, says that love is blind
Still we’re often told, seek and ye shall find
So I’m going to seek a certain lad I’ve had in mind

Looking everywhere, haven’t found him yet
He’s the big affair I cannot forget
Only man I ever think of with regret

I’d like to add his initial to my monogram
Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb?

There’s a somebody I’m longin’ to see
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who’ll watch over me

I’m a little lamb who’s lost in the wood
I know I could always be good
To one who’ll watch over me

Although he may not be
The man some girls think of as handsome
To my heart, he carries the key

Won’t you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me.

Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin

This is one of my most requested pieces. Mostly by people who think they are being funny, but then are surprised when I can actually play it! I have included this 1971 Led Zeppelin hit in background music at parties for all occasions (and occasionally, during a wedding ceremony!).

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

There’s a lady who’s sure
All that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh ooh and she’s buying a stairway to heaven.

There’s a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
There’s a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There’s a feeling I get
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And it’s whispered that soon, If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.
If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow,
Don’t be alarmed now,
It’s just a spring clean for the May queen.

Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There’s still time to change the road you’re on.
And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won’t go
In case you don’t know,
The piper’s calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.

There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How ev’rything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven.

Stand by Me

Lyrics

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No I won’t be afraid, no I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darlin’, darlin’, stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry, no I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darlin’, darlin’, stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand now by me, stand by me, stand by me-e, yeah

Whenever you’re in trouble won’t you stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me

Lyrics

Come my love I’ll tell you a tale,
Of a boy and girl
And their love story.
And how he loved her oh so much,
and all the charms she did possess
Now this did happen once upon a time,
When things were not so complex.
And how he worshiped the ground she walked,
And when he looked he became obsessed.

My love is like a storybook story,
But it’s as real as the feelings I feel.

His love was stronger than the power so dark,
A prince could have within his keeping.
His spells to weave and steal her heart,
Within her heart but only sleeping.

My love is like a storybook story,
But it’s as real as the feelings I feel.

And he said:
“Don’t you know I love you oh, so much,
and lay my heart at the foot of your dress.”
And she said:
“Don’t you know that storybook loves,
Always have a happy ending.”
Then he swooped her up just like in the books
And on his stallion they rode away.

My love is like a storybook story,
But it’s as real as the feelings I feel.

Sunrise, Sunset

This song comes from the 1964 Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof, and is sung during the wedding of Tzeitel. The parents of the bride sing about how they can’t believe their daughter has grown up, so this is a popular song for the seating of parents and grandparents before a wedding ceremony. The music was composed by Jerry Bock, with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick.

The trio version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp.

Harp, Violin, & Cello trio

Lyrics

Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?
I don’t remember growing older,
When did they?

When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?
Wasn’t it yesterday when they were small?

Sunrise sunset, sunrise, sunset,
Swiftly flow the days,
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers,
Blossoming even as they gaze…

Sunrise sunset, sunrise, sunset!
Swiftly fly the years,
One season following another,
Laden with happiness and tears…

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

I first learned this piece (and wrote my own harp arrangement of it) for the wedding of a couple who met at a Chicago Cubs baseball game. Since then, I’ve played it for other wedding ceremonies (as a processional and recessional), and for background music at other events – particularly during baseball season!

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

Lyrics

Take me out to the ball game
Take me out with the crowd
Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks
I don’t care if I never get back
Let me root, root, root
For the home team
If they don’t win it’s a shame
For it’s one, two,
Three strikes you’re out
At the old ball game

Tammy

This song from the movie Tammy and the Bachelor was a No. 1 hit for Debbie Reynolds in the 1950s. I have played this piece as backround music for weddings, receptions, and in restaurants.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

I hear the cottonwoods whisperin’ above
Tammy! Tammy! Tammy’s in love!
The old hootie owl hootie-hoo’s to the dove
Tammy! Tammy! Tammy’s in love!
Does my lover feel what I feel
When he comes near?
My heart beats so joyfully
You’d think that he could hear!
Wish I knew if he knew what I’m dreaming of!
Tammy! Tammy! Tammy’s in love!

Whippoorwill, whippoorwill, you and I know
Tammy! Tammy! Can’t let him go!
The breeze from the bayou keeps murmuring low
Tammy! Tammy! You love him so!
When the night is warm, soft and warm
I long for his charms!
I’d sing like a violin
If I were in his arms
Wish I knew if he knew what I’m dreaming of!
Tammy, Tammy, Tammy’s in love!

The Luckiest by Ben Folds

This song appears on the album Rockin’ the Suburbs by the alternative rock singer and songwriter Ben Folds. I have played it as background music for wedding receptions and other parties, for a bridal processional (accompanying a singer), and as a couple’s first dance.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

The harp & flute duet version below was recorded live at a wedding reception.

Harp & Flute Duet

Lyrics

I don’t get many things right the first time,
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns the stumbles,
And falls brought me here
And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face,
Now I see it every day

And I know
That I am, I am, I am, the luckiest

What if I had been born fifty years before you
In a house on the street
Where you lived
Maybe I’d be outside as you passed on your bike.
Would I know?
And in a wide sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize

And I know
That I am, I am, I am, the luckiest

I love you more then have
Ever found the way to say
To you

Next door there’s an old man who lived to his nineties and one day
Passed away in his sleep,
And his wife, she stayed for a couple of days, and passed away
I’m sorry I know that’s a strange way to tell you that I know we belong,

That I know
That I am, I am, I am, the luckiestV

The Prayer from “Quest for Camelot”

This song was written for the 1998 movie Quest for Camelot, and performed as a duet by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. It won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. I have played this piece for wedding receptions, parties, and for wedding ceremonies (as prelude, interludes, and processionals).

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics (English & Italian)

I pray you’ll be our eyes and watch us where we go
And help us to be wise in times when we don’t know
Let this be our prayer
When we lose our way
Lead us to a place
Guide us with your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe

La luce che tu hai
(I pray we’ll find your light)
Nel cuore resterà
(And hold it in our hearts)
A ricordarci che
(When stars go out each night)
Eterna stella sei
Nella mia preghiera
(Let this be our prayer)
Quanta fede c’è
(When shadows fill our day)

Lead us to a place
Guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe
Sogniamo un mondo senza più violenza
Un mondo di giustizia e di speranza
Ognuno dia la mano al suo vicino
Simbolo di pace, di fraternità
La forza che ci dà

È il desiderio che
(And watch us from above)
Ognuno trovi amor
(We hope each soul will find)
Intorno e dentro sé
(Another soul to love)

Let this be our prayer
Let this be our prayer
Just like every child
Just like every child
Need to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe
È la fede che
Hai acceso in noi
Sento che ci salverà

Theme from “Love Story” (Where Do I Begin?)

This was originally written by Frances Lai as an instrumental theme for the 1970 movie Love Story. Lyrics by Carl Sigman were added after the song became popular. This piece can be part of a wedding prelude or background music at any event.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Where do I begin
To tell the story of how great a love can be
The sweet love story that is older than the sea
The simple truth about the love she brings to me
Where do I start

With her first hello
She gave new meaning to this empty world of mine
There’ll never be another love, another time
She came into my life and made the living fine
She fills my heart

She fills my heart with very special things
With angels’ songs, with wild imaginings
She fills my soul with so much love
That anywhere I go I’m never lonely
With her around, who could be lonely
I reach for her hand, it’s always there

How long does it last?
Can love be measured by the hours in a day?
I have no answers now but this much I can say
I know I’ll need her till the stars all burn away
And she’ll be there

How long does it last?
Can love be measured by the hours in a day?
I have no answers now but this much I can say
I know I’ll need her till the stars all burn away
And she’ll be there

Thinking Out Loud

This romantic ballad by Ed Sheeran was released in 2014 and won the Grammy for Song of the Year. It works well during a wedding ceremony or reception, and as background music for any event.

This piece can be played on pedal or lever harp.

The duet version below was recoreded live at a restaurant in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Harp & Steel Pan Duet

Lyrics

When your legs don’t work like they used to before
And I can’t sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks

And darling I will be loving you ’til we’re 70
And baby my heart could still fall as hard at 23
And I’m thinking ’bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe just the touch of a hand
Oh me I fall in love with you every single day
And I just wanna tell you I am

So honey now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I’m thinking out loud
Maybe we found love right where we are

When my hair’s all but gone and my memory fades
And the crowds don’t remember my name
When my hands don’t play the strings the same way, mm
I know you will still love me the same

‘Cause honey your soul can never grow old, it’s evergreen
Baby your smile’s forever in my mind and memory
I’m thinking ’bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe it’s all part of a plan
I’ll just keep on making the same mistakes
Hoping that you’ll understand

But baby now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I’m thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are

This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)

Jazz great Natalie Cole’s first single, this song was released in 1975 and hit #1 on the R&B charts. It makes an excellent up-tempo recessional for a wedding ceremony or part of the background music for cocktails/dinner at the reception.

This piece can be played on pedal harp only.

The duet versions below were recoreded live at wedding ceremonies.

Harp & Piano Duet

Harp & Violin Duet

Lyrics

This will be
An everlasting love
This will be
The one I’ve waited for
This will be
The first time anyone has loved me, oh

I’m so glad
He found in time
And I’m so glad that
He rectified my mind
This will be
An everlasting love for me, whoa, oh

Loving you
Is some kind of wonderful
Because you’ve shown me
Just how much you care
You’ve given me the thrill of a lifetime
And made me believe you’ve got more thrills to spare, oh

This will be
An everlasting love, oh, yes, it will now
You’ve brought a lot of sunshine into my life
You’ve filled me with happiness I never knew
You gave me more joy than I ever dreamed of
And no one, no one can take the place of you, ooh

This will be, you and me, yes, siree, eternally
Huggin’ and squeezin’ and kissin’ and pleasin’
Together forever through rain or whatever
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you and me

So long as I’m livin’ true love I’ll be givin’, to you I’ll be servin’
‘Cause you’re so deservin’
Hey, you’re so deservin’
You’re so deservin’, yeah, yeah, yeah
The love, the love, the love, the love,
the love, the love, love, love
From now on, from now onV

Throne Room

Composed by John Williams, this theme first appears in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the first film of the original Star Wars trilogy. It makes an excellent non-traditional recessional!

The version for harp, violin, and cello trio below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp.

Time to Say Goodbye (Con te partiro)

First released as a solo, and sung entirely in Italian, by Andrea Bocelli, this song was hugely popular across Europe. As a duet with Sarah Brightman (and sung partially in English, partially in Italian), it became even more successful. I have played this beautiful piece for receptions and in wedding ceremonies for the prelude or interlude. This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

English Lyrics

When I’m alone
I dream on the horizon
And words fail;
Yes, I know there is no light
In a room where the sun is absent,
If you are not with me, with me.
At the windows
Show everyone my heart
Which you set alight;
Enclose within me
The light you
Encountered on the street.

Time to say goodbye
To countries I never
Saw and shared with you,
Now, yes, I shall experience them.
I’ll go with you
On ships across seas
Which, I know,
No, no, exist no longer.
It’s time to say goodbye…

When you are far away
I dream on the horizon
And words fail,
And, Yes, I know
That you are with me;
You, my moon, are here with me,
My sun, you are here with me,
With me, with me, with me.

Time to say goodbye
To countries I never
Saw and shared with you,
Now, yes, I shall experience them.

I’ll go with you
On ships across seas
Which, I know,
No, no, exist no longer,
With you I shall experience them again.

I’ll go with you
On ships across seas
Which, I know,
No, no, exist no longer;
With you I shall experience them again.

I’ll go with you,
I with you.

Try to Remember from “The Fantasticks”

The opening number of the musical comedy The Fantasticks, it was sung in the original Off-Broadway production by Jerry Orbach. Since then, it has been covered by artists such as Liza Minnelli, Josh Groban, and Harry Belafonte. I often play it as background music during receptions and parties.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain so yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a young and callow fellow,
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.

Try to remember when life was so tender
That no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.

Deep in December it’s nice to remember
Although you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December it’s nice to remember
Without a hurt the heart is hollow.
Deep in December it’s nice to remember
The fire of September that made you mellow.
Deep in December our hearts should remember then follow.

Then follow

Unchained Melody

The Righteous Brothers made the most famous recording of this 1955 classic pop song, and it was featured in the 1990 film Ghost. It has also been recorded by Elvis Presley, LeeAnn Rimes, and Cyndi Lauper. This is a popular choice for wedding ceremonies (prelude, wedding party processional, or interlude) and receptions.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me

Lonely rivers flow
To the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea
Lonely rivers sigh
“Wait for me, wait for me”
I’ll be coming home, wait for me

Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered, for your touch
A long, lonely time
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me

Venus in Blue Jeans

A hit for Jimmy Clanton in 1962, this song was written by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller. I have played it for wedding receptions and parties celebrating many different occasions.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

She’s Venus in blue jeans
Mona Lisa with a ponytail
She’s walkin’ talkin’ work of art
She’s the girl who stole my heart

My Venus in blue jeans
Is the Cinderella I adore
She’s my very special angel, too
A fairy tale come true

They say there’s seven wonders in the world
But what they say is out of date
There’s more than seven wonders in the world
I just met number eight

My Venus in blue jeans
Is ev’rything I hoped she’d be
A teenage goddess from above
And she belongs to me

My Venus in blue jeans
Is ev’rything I hoped she’d be
A teenage goddess from above
And she belongs to me

Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day

Rock music on the harp! This song is from Green Day’s seventh studio album, American Idiot. I have played this piece as background music for restaurants and parties for many occasions.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father’s come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father’s come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends

The Wedding Song (There is Love)

A 1971 song by Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul and Mary), this piece is a frequent request for wedding ceremonies. In this version, a classical soprano sings to harp accompaniment, but it can also be played as an instrumental solo.

The performance below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal or lever harp.

Harp & Classical Vocalist

Lyrics

He is now to be among you
at the calling of your hearts.
Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits here has caused Him to remain
for whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is love
There is love

Well a man shall leave his mother
and a woman leave her home
They shall travel on to where the two shall be as one.
As it was in the beginning, is now until the end.
Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again.
There is love
There is love

Well then what’s to be the reason for becoming man and wife
Is it love that brings you here, or love that brings you life.
For if loving is the answer then who’s the giving for.
Do you believe in something that you’ve never seen before
There is love

The marriage of your spirits here has caused him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name
There is love.

Wonderwall

This song was released by the English rock band Oasis in 1995. It was part of their second studio album, “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”

The duet version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Harp & Violin duet

Lyrics

Today is gonna be the day
That they’re gonna throw it back to you
By now you should’ve somehow
Realized what you gotta do
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do, about you now

Backbeat, the word was on the street
That the fire in your heart is out
I’m sure you’ve heard it all before
But you never really had a doubt
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I
Would like to say to you but I don’t know how

Because maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you’re my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day
But they’ll never throw it back to you
By now you should’ve somehow
Realized what you’re not to do
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do, about you now

And all the roads that lead you there are winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I
Would like to say to you but I don’t know how

I said maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you’re my wonderwall

I said maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me
you’re gonna be the one that saves me
you’re gonna be the one that saves me

You are the Reason

Lyrics

There goes my heart beating
‘Cause you are the reason
I’m losing my sleep
Please come back now
And there goes my mind racing
And you are the reason
That I’m still breathing
I’m hopeless now

I’d climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I’ve broken
Oh, ’cause I need you to see
That you are the reason

There goes my hands shaking
And you are the reason
My heart keeps bleeding
I need you now
And if I could turn back the clock
I’d make sure the light defeated the dark
I’d spend every hour, of every day
Keeping you safe

And I’d climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I’ve broken
Oh, ’cause I need you to see
That you are the reason

I don’t wanna fight no more
I don’t wanna hide no more
I don’t wanna cry no more
Come back I need you to hold me (you are the reason)
Be a little closer now
Just a little closer now
Come a little closer
I need you to hold me tonight

I’d climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I’ve broken
‘Cause I need you to see
That you are the reason

You Raise Me Up

This beautiful piece was popularized by Josh Groban and Westlife in the early 2000s. I have played this piece for numerous wedding ceremonies, primarily as a harp solo, but also as accompaniment to a vocalist or other instrumental soloist. In addition, it works well for background music at any event.

The trio version for harp, violin, and cello was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

When I am down, and, oh, my soul, so weary
When troubles come, and my heart burdened be
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence
Until you come and sit awhile with me

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be

You’ll Never Walk Alone from “Carousel”

This is the most well-known of songs from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical Carousel. It has been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Doris Day. It is also sung at football matches around the world, being particularly associated with Liverpool FC.

It is a popular choice for a wedding ceremony (prelude, processional, or interlude) or background music for any event.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark

At the end of a storm
There’s a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone

You’ll never walk alone

Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone

You’ll never walk alone

Celtic, World, & Folk Music

Ash Grove – Welsh

Ash Grove

A folk song from the Welsh tradition, this piece works well in a wedding ceremony prelude or as background music for other events. It is especially appropriate for parties taking place around St. David’s Day. The hymns “Let All Things Now Living” and “Sent Forth by God’s Blessing” are set to this tune.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Down yonder green valley, where streamlets meander,
When twilight is fading I pensively rove
Or at the bright noontide in solitude wander,
Amid the dark shades of the lonely ash grove;
‘T was there, while the blackbird was cheerfully singing,
I first met my dear one, the joy of my heart!
Around us for gladness the bluebells were ringing,
Ah! then little thought I how soon we should part.

Still glows the bright sunshine o’er valley and mountain,
Still warbles the blackbird its note from the tree;
Still trembles the moonbeam on streamlet and fountain,
But what are the beauties of nature to me?
With sorrow, deep sorrow, my bosom is laden,
All day I go mourning in search of my love;
Ye echoes, oh, tell me, where is the sweet maiden?
“She sleeps, ‘neath the green turf down by the ash grove.”

By Kell’s Waters

I often play this Welsh folk song as background music during a wedding prelude, corporate function, or private party – especially around St. David’s Day.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Carolan’s Welcome

Written by the Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan, it was performed by The Chieftains for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Dublin, Ireland. This piece makes a lovely addition to a wedding prelude, especially if the couple has Irish heritage. I also perform this piece for St. Patrick’s Day events.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Carrickfergus

This Irish folk song was made popular in the 1960s by The Clancy Brothers and Dominic Behan, although the melody is much older. It has been recorded by artists as varied as Celtic Woman, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

The harp & string quartet version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

Harp & String Quartet

Lyrics

I wish I was in Carrickfergus
Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
The deepest ocean for my love to find

But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
Neither have I wings to fly
If I could find me a handsome boatsman
To ferry me over to my love and die

My childhood days bring back sad reflections
Of happy times spent so long ago
My childhood friends and my own relations
Have all passed on now like melting snow

But I’ll spend my days in endless roaming
Soft is the grass, my bed is free
Ah, to be back now in Carrickfergus
On that long road down to the sea

I’ll spend my days in endless roaming
Soft is the grass, my bed is free
But I am sick now, and my days are numbered
Come all you young men and lay me down

David of the White Rock (Dafydd y Garreg Wen)

A Welsh folk song, this air is especially appropriate for the harp, as the lyrics speak of a Welsh musician lying on his deathbed, requesting that his harp be brought to him to play one last tune. This hauntingly beautiful melody is a lovely addition to memorials and funeral services, or any event that celebrates St. David or Welsh heritage.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Welsh Lyrics

‘Cariwch’, medd Dafydd, ‘fy nhelyn i mi,
Ceisiaf cyn marw roi tôn arni hi.
Codwch fy nwylo i gyraedd y tant;
Duw a’ch bendithio fy ngweddw a’m plant!’

‘Neithiwr mi glywais lais angel fel hyn:
“Dafydd, tyrd adref, a chwarae trwy’r glyn!”
Delyn fy mebyd, ffarwel i dy dant!
Duw a’ch bendithio fy ngweddw a’m plant!’

English Translation

‘Carry’, said David, ‘my harp to me’
I would like, before dying, to give a tune on it (her)
Lift my hands to reach the strings
God bless you, my widow and children!

Last night I heard an angel’s voice like this:
“David, come home and play through the glen!”
Harp of my youth, farewell to your strings!
God bless you, my widow and children!

Down by the Salley Gardens (Gort na Sailean)

This 1889 poem by William Butler Yeats was set to the tune “The Maids of the Mourne Shore” by Herbert Hughes. A beautiful Irish ballad, it is often requested for Irish weddings, christenings, and funerals.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

It was down by the Sally Gardens, my love and I did meet.
She crossed the Sally Gardens, with little snow-white feet.
She bid me to take life easy, as the leaves grow on the tree,
But I was young and foolish, and with her I did not agree.

In a field down by the river, my love and I did stand
And upon my leaning shoulder, she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me to take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs,
But I was young and foolish, and now I am full of tears.

Down by the Sally Gardens, my love and I did meet.
She crossed the Sally Gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me to take life easy, as the leaves blow on the tree,
But I was young and foolish, and with her I did not agree.

Fanaid Grove

An Irish song from County Donegal, this sad and plaintive air is also known as “The Fatal Snowstorm” and “The Outcast Mother.” It is a marked contrast to other Irish airs and dances that I typically play, but the melody is beautiful and reflective.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Fanny Power

A tune by the Irish harper-composer Turlough O’Carolan, it was written for an heiress named Frances Power on the occasion of her wedding to Richard Trench. It is lively and upbeat, and can be used as a wedding ceremony recessional, bridal processional, or during the postlude as guests exit the ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Farewell to Liverpool (Fare Thee Well, My Own True Love)

A folk song and sea chanty, this piece tells of a sailor departing on a long journey to California. It was especially popular during the folk music revival of the 1940s-1960s, and was recorded by The Dubliners and The Pogues. It was adapted by Bob Dylan for his song “Farewell.” It can be used at any time during a wedding ceremony, and is especially appropriate if the couple has Irish heritage. I also play this piece for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Farewell to Princes’ landing stage River Mersey fare thee well
I am bound for California, a place I know right well
So fare thee well my own true love
When I return united we will be
It’s not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee

Farewell to Lower Frederick Street, Anson Terrace and Park Lane
I am bound away for to leave you and I’ll never see you again
So fare thee well my own true love
When I return united we will be
It’s not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee

I am bound for California by way of stormy Cape Horn
And I will write to thee a letter, love, when I am homeward bound
So fare thee well my own true love
When I return united we will be
It’s not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee

Flow Gently, Sweet Afton

This is a Robert Burns poem set to music by Jonathan E. Spillman in 1837. It shares a melody with one version of the Christmas carol “Away in a Manger.” It has a light and lilting melody, and works well for a wedding prelude or interlude during the ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Flow gently, sweet Afton! amang thy green braes,
Flow gently, I’ll sing thee a song in thy praise;
My Mary’s asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

Thou stockdove whose echo resounds thro’ the glen,
Ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den,
Thou green-crested lapwing thy screaming forbear,
I charge you, disturb not my slumbering Fair.

How lofty, sweet Afton, thy neighbouring hills,
Far mark’d with the courses of clear, winding rills;
There daily I wander as noon rises high,
My flocks and my Mary’s sweet cot in my eye.

How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,
Where, wild in the woodlands, the primroses blow;
There oft, as mild Ev’ning weeps over the lea,
The sweet-scented birk shades my Mary and me.

Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,
And winds by the cot where my Mary resides;
How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,
As, gathering sweet flowerets, she stems thy clear wave.

Flow gently, sweet Afton, amang thy green braes,
Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my lays;
My Mary’s asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

Haru No Ogawa (Spring Brook)

This song is well-known in Japan (especially among children) as it has been taught in the schools there for over 100 years. It makes a soft and flowing processional for a bride or wedding party, or can be used as part of the prelude music as guests are being seated.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Japanese Lyrics

Haru no ogawa wa
sara-sara iku yo
Kishi no sumire ya
renge no hana ni
Sugata yasashiku
iro utsukushiku
Sake yo sake yo to
sasayakinagara

English Lyrics

Smoothly, smoothly goes the brook
now that spring has come again.
To the violets on the bank
and the lotus blossoms too,
“Let your form be kind and gentle
and your colors beautiful:
“Bloom ye, bloom!” says the brook
in a whisper as it goes.

I See You, My Beloved

This Czech-Bohemian folk song is quite popular for weddings. I have played it for every moment in the ceremony, from guest seating to processionals to the recessional.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Loch Lomond

This Scottish folk song is traditionally the final song played at the end of a wedding reception or party in Scotland. It has been recorded by groups as diverse as hard rock band AC/DC, jazz singer Maxine Sullivan, and the a cappella group The Kings Singers. It makes a beautiful harp solo or I can accompany a singer. This piece is a staple for Burns Night and St. Andrew’s celebrations, and can also be played for wedding ceremonies and private parties.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomond.

O ye’ll tak’ the high road, and I’ll tak’ the low road,
And I’ll be in Scottland a’fore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomond.

‘Twas then that we parted, in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o’ Ben Lomond,
Where in purple hue, the hieland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.

The wee birdies sing and the wildflowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping.
But the broken heart it kens, nae second spring again,
Though the waeful may cease frae their grieving.

Minstrel Boy

This is an old Irish air “The Moreen,” used as a setting for the lyrics by Thomas Moore. The tune is a favorite among Irish-American groups, and you will often hear it played by bagpipes and flute bands.

The trio version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal or lever harp.

Harp, Violin, & Cello trio

Lyrics

The Minstrel-Boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you’ll find him;
His father’s sword he has girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him.
“Land of song!” said the warrior-bard,
“Tho’ all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!”

The Minstrel fell!—but the foeman’s chain
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov’d ne’er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said, “No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and bravery!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free,
They shall never sound in slavery.

Parting Glass

This traditional Scottish song is also popular in Ireland, and often sung at the end of a gathering of friends.

The trio version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal or lever harp.

Harp, Violin, & Cello trio

Lyrics

Of all the money that e’er I had
I spent it in good company
And all the harm I’ve ever done
Alas it was to none but me
And all I’ve done for want of wit
To mem’ry now I can’t recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be to you all

So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate’er befalls
And gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

Of all the comrades that e’er I had
They’re sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e’er I had
They’d wish me one more day to stay
But since it fell unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

Fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate’er befalls
And gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

But since it fell unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate’er befalls
And gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

Serch Hudol (The Allurement of Love or Love’s Fascination)

Harps are well-loved by the Welsh, and the folk songs of Wales are particularly suited to the instrument. And 1895 publication even said “Tunes like Serch Hudol…lose their very soul and life when transferred from the harp to any other instrument.” This piece is simply perfect on the harp, and I have played it for all elements of a wedding ceremony, as well as for receptions and Welsh-themed events.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

English Lyrics

Passion of enchanting charm,
Is flooding the grove,
When there be a myriad of gentle birds,
Singing in the wood.
All nature is singing together,
Nothing is deaf or mute,
There is more music in the world,
Than man ever supposed:

The choirs of bright Bliss,
Shall sing forever without coming to an end,
The golden harp the family of the sky have,
In the presence of God himself!
There is a song flying on its course,
In the sound of the sea
and the voice of the wind,
The stars in the morning were singing before,
Why will man not sing?

Enchanting passion is,
Everything that is living,
In the heaven and earth of God:
From the sun which is burning above,
To the glow-worm, who was given,
To wander the bank and the root of the trees,
For light on the footpath,
Which leads to thy house.

Beautiful is the picture and colour,
Of everything that comes from God’s hands,
Where shall the eye of man go,
that there is not
In his presence,
the pretty and the intricate?
Beauty is flooding heaven,
And every creature He created,
From the eagle on his strong wing,
To the wren which is in the thorn!

Shenandoah

This is an American folk song dating from the 1800s, first popular among fur traders and then as a sea shanty.

The trio version below was recorded live at a wedding ceremony.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Harp, Violin, & Cello trio

Lyrics

Oh Shenandoah,
I long to see you,
And hear your rolling river.
Oh Shenandoah,
I long to see you,
Way, we’re bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

Oh Shenandoah,
I love your daughter,
And hear your rolling river.
For her I’d cross
Your roaming waters,
Way, we’re bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

‘Tis seven years
since last I’ve seen you,
And hear your rolling river.
‘Tis seven years
since last I’ve seen you,
Way, we’re bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

Oh Shenandoah,
I long to hear you,
And hear your rolling river.
Oh Shenandoah,
I long to hear you,
Way, we’re bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

Oh Shenandoah,
I long to hear you,
Far away, you rolling river.
Oh Shenandoah,
Just to be near you,
Far away, far away.
Across the wide Missouri.

Shule Aroon (Siuil A Run)

This is one of the most often performed traditional Irish tunes, including by Celtic Woman, Judy Collins, and The Chieftains. It is part of the music for Michael Flatley’s ord of the Dance, mentioned by James Joyce in Ulysses, and shares a tune with the American Revolutionary War-era song “Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier.”

This song is lovely as background music for any event, and particularly for St. Patrick’s day or other Irish celebrations.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

I wish I were on yonder hill
‘Tis there I’d sit and cry my fill,
And ev’ry tear would turn a mill,
Iss guh day thoo a voorneen slawn.

Shule, shule, shule aroon
Shule go succir agus, shule go kewn;
Shule go dheen durrus oggus aylig lume,
Iss guh day thoo avorneen slawn.

I’ll sell my rod, I’ll sell my reel
I’ll sell my only spinning wheel
To by my love a sword of steel
Iss guh day thoo a voorneen slawn.

I’ll dye my petticoats, I’ll dye them red
And through the streets I’ll beg my bread,
Until my parents shall wish me dead
Iss guh day thoo a voorneen slawn.

I wish, I wish, I wish in vain
I wish I had my heart again,
And vainly think I’d not complain
Iss guh day thoo a voorneen slawn.

But now my love has gone to France
To try his fortune to advance.
If he e’er come back, ’tis but a chance
Iss guh day thoo a voorneen slawn.

Come, come, come O love,
Quickly come to me, softly move,
Come to the door and away we’ll flee,
And safe forever may my darling be.

Suogan (Suo Gan)

This Welsh lullaby was first published around 1800. It is frequently performed around Christmastime, with recordings featured on holiday albums released by Chanticleer, The Irish Tenors, and the Vienna Boys’ Choir. I have played it for weddings, receptions, and christenings.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Welsh Lyrics

Huna blentyn ar fy mynwes
Clyd a chynnes ydyw hon;
Breichiau mam sy’n dynn amdanat,
Cariad mam sy dan fy mron;
Ni chaiff dim amharu’th gyntun,
Ni wna undyn â thi gam;
Huna’n dawel, annwyl blentyn,
Huna’n fwyn ar fron dy fam.

Huna’n dawel, heno, huna,
Huna’n fwyn, y tlws ei lun;
Pam yr wyt yn awr yn gwenu,
Gwenu’n dirion yn dy hun?
Ai angylion fry sy’n gwenu,
Arnat ti yn gwenu’n llon,
Tithau’n gwenu’n ôl dan huno,
Huno’n dawel ar fy mron?

Paid ag ofni, dim ond deilen
Gura, gura ar y ddôr;
Paid ag ofni, ton fach unig
Sua, sua ar lan y môr;
Huna blentyn, nid oes yma
Ddim i roddi iti fraw;
Gwena’n dawel yn fy mynwes
Ar yr engyl gwynion draw.

English Lyrics

Sleep child upon my bosom
It is cosy and warm;
Mother’s arms are tight around you,
A mother’s love is in my breast;
Nothing shall disturb your slumber,
Nobody will do you harm;
Sleep in peace, dear child,
Sleep quietly on your mother’s breast.

Sleep peacefully tonight, sleep;
Gently sleep, my lovely;
Why are you now smiling,
Smiling gently in your sleep?
Are angels above smiling on you,
As you smile cheerfully,
Smiling back and sleeping,
Sleeping quietly on my breast?

Do not fear, it is nothing but a leaf
Beating, beating on the door;
Do not fear, only a small wave
Murmurs, murmurs on the seashore;
Sleep child, there’s nothing here
Nothing to give you fright;
Smile quietly in my bosom,
On the blessed angels yonder.

The Water is Wide (O Waly, Waly)

This traditional song has roots in the British Isles and was popularized by Pete Seeger during the folk music revival. It has been arranged and performed countless times, by classical, country, pop, and rock musicians. I have played this piece for wedding ceremonies and church services, and as background music for parties and receptions.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

The water is wide, I cannot get o’er
Neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall cross my true love and I

I lean’d my back against an oak
Thinking it was a mighty tree
But first it bent and then it broke
So did my love prove false to me

I put my hand in some soft bush
Thinking the sweetest flow’are to find
I prick’d my finger to the bone
And left the sweetest flow’are behind

O love is handsome and love is kind
Gay as a jewel when it is new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like the morning dew

The water is wide, I cannot get o’er
Neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall cross my true love and I

Aatini el-nay

A popular ballad by Fairouz, this can be played by solo harp or in an ensemble. The video below was recorded live with a harp and flute duet during a performance in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The title translates as “Give Me the Nay and Sing,” with the text coming from a poem by Khalil Gibran. A nay is a type of Arabic flute.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Aatini el-nay, Harp & Flute Duet (live performance)

English lyrics:
Give me the nay and sing
for singing is the secret of existence
And the sound of the nay remains
After the end of existence
Have you, as I did, taken the forest
A house without limitations
Have you followed the streams
And climbed the rocks
Have you bathed in its fragrance
And dried yourself in its light
Have you tried drinking the Dawn as your wine
Out of divine/ether cups
Have you, as I did, sat in the afternoon
Between the vines
With the clusters hanging
Like golden chandeliers
Have you slept on the grass at night
And used the sky as your blanket
Ascetic in what will come
Forgetting what has passed
Give me the nay and sing
Forget the disease and its cure
For people are only lines
Written on water

Akher Ayam El Saifeye (The Last Days of Summer)

This 1975 Fairuz song is a lovely addition to a Middle Eastern event or wedding.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

The harp & flute duet version below was recorded live at a wedding reception.

Harp & Flute Duet

English lyrics:
On the last days of summer,
As the girl slowly drove,
And neared Mays-el-Reem village,
Only for her car to break down.

On the last days of journeys,
There’s a blue cloud and a lot of cold,
And I stand alone,
Forgotten in this gray field,
Me, and the night, and this song.

I’m late, but what can be done?
My dear, we missed the date,
If only I could visit you with my eyes,
And may the car never move again.

Allah Maak Ya Hawana

This song was composed by the Rahbani Brothers and recorded by Fairuz on her 1974 album “Loulou.”

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

The harp & flute duet version below was recorded live at a wedding reception.

Harp & Flute Duet

English lyrics:
God is with you, our love, our departure
The rule of air, oh our love, and we will part
O people who stay up late, you who give us wait
Tomorrow, if they mention lovers, they will still remember us
Remember us, remember us, remember us, remember us

We stay together and your voice says to me at night while I listen
I love you until the stars of the night are a star and a star is waiting
We stay together and your voice says to me at night while I listen
I love you until the stars of the night are a star and a star is waiting

Love ended and the word became silent
And the heart is filled with nothing but a star
Love ended and the word became silent
And the heart is filled with nothing but a star

I don’t want to talk, they keep talking
Everything ends, even dreams
I don’t want to talk, they keep talking
Everything ends, even dreams

And the days erase the days
God is with you, our love, our departure
The rule of passion, oh our passion, and we will part
O people who stay up late, you who give us wait
Tomorrow, if they mention lovers, they will still remember us
Remember us, remember us, remember us, remember us

Biktub Ismak, Harp & Flute Duet (live performance)

English lyrics:
I write your name, my darling, on the old tree
You write my name, my darling, on the sand in the street
And tomorrow when it rains on the broken stories
Your name will remain, my darling
And mine will be erased

I talk about you, my darling, to the people of the neighborhood
You talk about me, my darling, to the stream of water
And when the night comes and people sit out under their lanterns
They will talk about you, my darling
And I will be forgotten

And you gave me a rose
I showed it to my friends
I hid it in my book then planted it on my pillow
I gave you a flower pot
You didn’t take care of it
Until the present got lost

And you tell me you love me
You don’t know how much
Since you love me so much, why oh why?
Do I write your name, my darling, on the old tree?
You write my name, my darling, on the sand in the street?
And tomorrow when it rains on the broken stories
Your name will remain, my darling
And mine will be erased
Mine will be erased

Amazing Grace; Harp Solo/Harp & Violin Duet

Amazing Grace

This hymn is a perennial favorite for weddings, memorials, and church services. I can play it as a harp solo or to accompany vocalists, congregational singing, or other musicians.

The harp and violin duet version below was recorded live at a church banquet.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Harp Solo

Harp & Violin Duet

Lyrics

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

Latin Lyrics

Ave Maria, gratia plena,
Maria, gratia plena,
Maria, gratia plena,
Ave, Ave, Dominus,
Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus,
Et benedictus fructus ventris tui,
Ventris tui, Jesus.
Ave Maria!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
Ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
Ora, ora pro nobis;
Ora, ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
Nunc et in hora mortis,
In hora mortis nostrae.
In hora, hora mortis nostrae,
In hora mortis nostrae.
Ave Maria!

English Translation

Hail Mary, full of grace,
Mary, full of grace,
Mary, full of grace,
Hail, Hail, the Lord
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed,
Blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Thy womb, Jesus.
Hail Mary!

Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Pray, pray for us;
Pray for us sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death,
The hour of our death.
The hour, the hour of our death,
The hour of our death.
Hail Mary!

Where all is peace?

Oh, deep River, Lord,
I want to cross over into campground.

Lyrics

Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Your hair is full of dewdrops
Your lips are as roses unto the morning
I will pick them for myself

Lyrics

Hark how the bells
Sweet silver bells
All seem to say
Throw cares away
Christmas is here
Bringing good cheer
To young and old
Meek and the bold

Ding, dong, ding, dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
All caroling
One seems to hear
Words of good cheer
From ev’rywhere
Filling the air
Ding dong ding dong ding

Oh how they pound
Raising the sound
O’er hill and dale
Telling their tale
Gaily they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer
Christmas is here

Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas

Hark how the bell
Sweet silver bells
All seem to say
Throw cares away
Christmas is here
Bringing good cheer
To young and old
Meek and the bold

Ding, dong, ding, dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
All caroling
One seems to hear
Words of good cheer
From ev’rywhere
Filling the air

Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas

On on they send
On without end
Their joyful tone to every home
Ding dong ding dong ding
Ding dong ding dong ding
Christmas is here
Bringing good cheer
To young and old
Meek and the bold
Ding dong ding dong ding
That is their song
With joyful ring

Ding dong ding dong ding

I Wonder as I Wander

This Christmas carol was written by John Jacob Niles and based on a folk tune he heard sung in Appalachian North Carolina in 1933.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

I wonder as I wander out under the sky
How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die
For poor on’ry people like you and like I;
I wonder as I wander out under the sky

When Mary birthed Jesus ’twas in a cow’s stall
With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all
But high from God’s heaven, a star’s light did fall
And the promise of ages it then did recall.

If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing
A star in the sky or a bird on the wing
Or all of God’s Angels in heaven to sing
He surely could have it, ’cause he was the King

I wonder as I wander out under the sky
How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die
For poor on’ry people like you and like I;
I wonder as I wander out under the sky

Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming

This Christmas carol and Marian hymn has German origins, and was first published in 1599. It is appropriate for Advent and Christmas worship services, December weddings, or holiday parties.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming
From tender stem hath sprung,
Of Jesse’s lineage coming,
As men of old have sung.

It came a flow’ret bright
Amid the cold of winter
When half-spent was the night.

Isaiah ’twas foretold it,
This Rose that I have in mind.
And with Mary we behold it,
The Virgin Mother kind.

To show God’s love aright,
She bore to men a Savior
When half-spent was the night.

Silent Night (Stille Nacht)

This German Christmas carol was composed by organist Franz Gruber to lyrics by Father Joseph Mohr. The first performance was on Christmas Eve of 1818 at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, Austria.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night!
Son of God love’s pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth

Still, Still, Still

This traditional Austrian Christmas carol is based on a folk tune from the Salzburg area. The German lyrics describe Mary singing the baby Jesus to sleep.

This piece can be played on pedal harp or lever harp.

Lyrics

Still, still, still,
One can hear the falling snow.
For all is hushed,
The world is sleeping,
Holy Star its vigil keeping.
Still, still, still,
One can hear the falling snow.

Sleep, sleep, sleep,
‘Tis the eve of our Saviour’s birth.
The night is peaceful all around you,
Close your eyes,
Let sleep surround you.
Sleep, sleep, sleep,
‘Tis the eve of our Saviour’s birth.

Dream, dream, dream,
Of the joyous day to come.
While guardian angels without number,
Watch you as you sweetly slumber.
Dream, dream, dream,
Of the joyous day to come.
