As I did last year, I reviewed the music from all of the weddings I provided harp music for throughout 2012 (see the list from 2011). Again, “Canon in D” is a top choice. Last year, it was the most-requested piece for both the bridal processional and the wedding party processional. This year, it not only topped both of those lists, but was the most popular selection for the seating of families as well!
Jason Mraz’s song “I’m Yours” has become significantly more popular, as has music from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. “Fields of Gold” by Sting hasn’t been requested as much, and the traditional recessional (Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March”) dropped below “Trumpet Tune.” Train’s “Marry Me” is still a popular choice for mid-ceremony music, where it is tied for the top spot with “Ave Maria” and Enya’s “Only Time.”
Most couples choose one of the traditional pieces for the processionals, but are more willing to try something unique for their mid-ceremony music (such as for the unity candle/sand) and for their recessional. Many of my weddings combined the traditional wedding favorites with contemporary pieces that everyone would recognize. Last year, my brides were nearly evenly split between “Canon in D” and “Here Comes the Bride” for their processionals. In 2012, nearly twice as many opted for “Canon” than for the more traditional selection!
Going beyond just a “Top 10” list, the listing below includes ALL of the music chosen by my brides and grooms in 2012. Each list has the most popular pieces at the top, and the numbers in parentheses tell you how many times my couples have chosen that song for that moment of their ceremony.
Click on the songs highlighted in blue to hear a sample of me playing those pieces on the harp.
