Catholic Wedding Music – Pana Illinois Harpist

Catholic Wedding Harp Music in Central Illinois

A full Catholic wedding Mass offers so many opportunities for beautiful music, from the arrival of the first guests through the final recessional. For Colleen and Shaye’s wedding at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Pana, Illinois, I provided solo harp music throughout the entire celebration, creating a program of classical and sacred selections chosen specifically for each moment of the Mass.

The church requires all music be sacred or classical, and the resulting program included Baroque repertoire, sacred music, folk melodies, and music written specifically for solo harp. Each selection brought its own character to the ceremony while creating a cohesive musical experience from beginning to end.

Prelude & Processional Harp Music

I began with prelude music as guests arrived and were seated. Prelude sets the atmosphere well before the formal procession begins, welcoming guests with live music as the sanctuary fills.

For the seating of the family, I played the Czech folk song “I See You, My Beloved.” Its lyrical melody translated beautifully to the harp and provided a graceful transition from the general prelude into the formal beginning of the wedding.

The wedding party entered to the “Chaconne” from Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen. The procession included five flower girls and one ring bearer along with the wedding party. I time the music to the procession itself, shaping the piece around the entrances so that the musical transitions and conclusion happen naturally with what is taking place in the aisle.

For the grand entrance, I played Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “The Call (Come My Way, My Truth, My Life).” Its sacred character and expressive melody made it a beautiful choice for the entrance and brought a different musical color to the final portion of the procession.

Solo Harp for a Catholic Wedding Mass

Music for a Full Catholic Wedding Mass

As the only musician for the wedding, I continued playing throughout the Mass wherever music was included in the liturgy.

For the offertory, the couple selected “Hymne” by Vangelis, arranged for solo harp. Later, during the Eucharist, I played the spiritual “Deep River.” Together, these selections added variety and expression to the musical program while complementing the reverent atmosphere of the Mass.

Catholic Wedding Processional on Harp

Music for a Catholic wedding is planned around the structure of the liturgy and the guidelines of the individual parish. There is a wonderful range of classical and sacred repertoire available, giving couples many opportunities to choose music that feels meaningful and personal.

I am happy to help couples explore that repertoire and find selections they genuinely love that also fit their church’s guidelines. From familiar sacred works to less frequently heard classical pieces, there are many possibilities for creating a program that feels distinctive while beautifully supporting the liturgy.

A Harp-Filled Recessional

After the final blessing, the recessional brought an exuberant change of character. I played the harp solo “Great Day,” a joyful piece filled with sweeping glissandos across the strings.

Those cascading glissandos are one of the harp’s most recognizable sounds, and here they created a bright, celebratory sendoff as the newly married couple made their way back up the aisle. It was a wonderful conclusion to a program that had moved through many different musical styles and moods over the course of the Mass.
