The evening before a wedding brings family and friends together for a celebration of its own. For Adrin and Cheney’s wedding weekend, the groom’s family hosted a rehearsal dinner and welcome party at their home in Blythewood, South Carolina, with harp music accompanying the gathering.
With guests representing several generations and a playlist that ranged from classic favorites to contemporary hits, the evening was an opportunity to enjoy familiar music, conversation, and time together before the wedding festivities continued.
Harp Music for a Rehearsal Dinner at Home
Hosting a rehearsal dinner or welcome party at a private residence creates an opportunity to personalize the celebration in ways that reflect the family and their guests. Live harp music adds both a beautiful instrumental sound and the striking visual presence of the harp, whether the gathering takes place indoors, outdoors, or across several entertaining spaces.
For this event, the family had no specific musical requests, so I designed a playlist with a broad range of familiar selections. With guests representing several generations, I wanted the music to offer recognizable favorites for everyone, drawing from decades of popular music alongside film and other instrumental selections.
The harp is especially versatile for this kind of gathering. Its sound brings a consistent musical character to songs from very different eras, allowing the repertoire to move naturally among styles while guests enjoy dinner and conversation.
From Elvis to Lana Del Rey on the Harp
The evening’s playlist moved freely across musical eras, with Elvis Presley alongside Lana Del Rey, The Beatles alongside Alex Warren, and Disney favorites alongside Led Zeppelin.
These combinations are part of what makes creating a playlist for a multigenerational gathering so interesting. A guest might recognize a song that has been popular for decades, followed by a selection from an artist whose music has become familiar much more recently.
The harp brings its own character to each arrangement, whether the original song is a classic rock favorite, a contemporary pop ballad, or a beloved Disney melody. That variety allows the music to appeal to different ages and musical tastes while maintaining a cohesive instrumental sound throughout the evening.
With no particular genre or artist requested, I could draw from my extensive repertoire to create a musical program that moved among generations and styles. The result was an evening of recognizable music chosen specifically for the guests and the occasion.
Bringing a Family Wedding Tradition into a New Generation
One of the most meaningful aspects of this celebration was the reason the family chose harp music in the first place. Having enjoyed a harpist at their own wedding, Cheney’s parents wanted to incorporate that experience into their son’s wedding weekend.Â
Family traditions can take many forms, from meaningful songs and ceremony customs to the instruments chosen for different parts of a celebration. Including the harp was a personal connection between the parents’ wedding and the next generation, with a completely new playlist reflecting the guests gathered for this occasion.
Harp Music for Wedding Welcome Parties & Rehearsal Dinners
Wedding music can extend well beyond the ceremony and reception. Rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, farewell brunches, and other wedding weekend gatherings offer additional opportunities to enjoy live music with family and friends.
A solo harpist brings a complete instrumental program to these occasions, with repertoire ranging from classical and jazz standards to pop, rock, Broadway, Disney, film and television music, Celtic and folk selections, and contemporary favorites.
For gatherings with guests of different generations, I can create a playlist that moves among familiar songs from several decades. Couples and families are also welcome to choose their own selections, whether that means music connected to family memories, favorite artists, or a particular theme for the celebration.
