Music has a unique way of honoring a life, offering comfort, reflection, and hope during moments of remembrance. I recently had the privilege of providing harp music for a memorial service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Paget, Bermuda, celebrating the life of a remarkable woman whose legacy continues to be felt by her family and community, even 50 years after her passing.
For this service, I performed on my Heartland Infinity Gold carbon fibre harp, an instrument whose warm, resonant tone is especially well suited to sacred spaces and meaningful ceremonies. Its rich, expressive sound filled the sanctuary beautifully, creating an atmosphere of peace and reflection throughout the service.
Prelude Music for Guests
As family and friends gathered, I performed a selection of classical and sacred prelude music while guests arrived and found their seats. Gentle harp music offers a quiet sense of comfort before a service begins, allowing guests time to reflect and remember.
Processional: Schubert’s Ave Maria
The service opened with “Ave Maria” as the family entered the sanctuary. This timeless work has long been associated with both worship services and memorials, and its graceful melody translated beautifully to the harp.
Music During the Service
Later in the service, I performed “The Prayer,” a heartfelt selection that offered another quiet moment of reflection during the ceremony.
The church’s pianist and organist accompanied the congregational hymns, while two vocal soloists shared meaningful musical tributes. Together, the various musicians created a service that was both personal and deeply moving.
One of the most memorable parts of the afternoon came as each of the deceased’s six children shared stories and memories, offering a touching portrait of a woman whose influence continues to shape her family decades later.
A Musical Farewell
The final musical selection was “Wind Beneath My Wings,” bringing the service to a gentle and emotional close. Following the conclusion of the ceremony, I performed additional postlude music as family and friends departed the sanctuary and gathered together to continue celebrating a life well lived.
