Kayla and Becky booked me before COVID was even a thing! Through an entire year (and then some!) of uncertainty, they still able to have a lovely Southwest Michigan wedding, making a few adaptations along the way.
When indoor gatherings were limited, they looked for a new venue that could accommodate all their friends and family for an outdoor celebration. The ended up switching to Tabor Hill Winery in Buchanan, and moved from a Saturday to the Friday of the same weekend. Fortunately, I had that date available!
It rained all week leading up to their wedding, but occasional breaks in the weather allowed them to have their outdoor ceremony. With the ground soaked, the harp had to be placed further back on the solid patio (and under a tent, with the rain coming and going!), but I amplified and everything came together!
The prelude included “Make You Feel My Love,” “Stairway to Heaven,” and “Lovely” by Billie Eilish. Family members were seated to “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. The wedding party entrance was Train’s “Marry Me.”
Each had their own bridal processional, with Kayla coming down the aisle to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and Becky to “A Thousand Years.” During the unity ceremony, I played “Conversations in the Dark” by John Legend. They went with something completely non-traditional for their recessional – “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen. They originally thought of it just as a joke, but when they realized I can play anything on the harp, they went for it!
I also played for their cocktail hour inside the adjacent tent. They chose more contemporary popular music, including “Havana” by Camila Cabello, “Cheap Thrills” by Sia, and “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa. The harp certainly doesn’t have to be classical. I play a wide variety of genres, so you can have music for any taste – or a mix with a little bit of everything!
