I love when I get to play my Bollywood harp music for an audience who knows the songs! For this wedding, Jaymine wanted to have the harp be a surprise for her family and guests. They didn’t know there would be live music for the Indian ceremony, let alone a harpist!
But that was just the beginning of the surprises. I played Western pop tunes and a couple of classical pieces as guests entered the ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines. Typical harp music.
But then the bridal party started down the aisle. To accompany their entrance, Jaymine chose “Tujhe Dekha To Yo Jaana Sanam” from the Bollywood movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Once the bridesmaids were in place, I played “Pehla Nasha” from the movie of the same name for the bride’s processional to the mandap. The second surprise was that I can play popular Indian music, too!
I continued to play light background music throughout the ceremony, including:
- Khuda Jaane
- Suraj Hua Maddham
- Kal Ho Naa Ho
- Meri Mehbooba
- Pani Da Rang
Before the ceremony began in the ballroom, I went outside to get a glimpse of the baraat. The groom entered on a tractor – only in Iowa!
Bollywood music sounds lovely on the harp, and is a delightful way to surprise your guests! I have played for Indian weddings in the US and throughout India, where I lived for two years.
