Not only was this a mother’s day celebration, but it was on my daughter’s 10th birthday! Fortunately, we were able to be together as her children’s choir was singing just before my program at Centenary United Methodist in Jacksonville.
Upon asking the organizer what type of music I should play or if there was any theme for the event, she said I could just play some of my own favorite songs. Well, that’s more of a challenge – it’s so difficult to choose! As I was going through my repertoire of popular pieces, the ones I selected sort of placed themselves in two categories: springtime/seasonal and musical theatre.
So the program opened with “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles, followed by “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie, “You are My Sunshine,” and “What a Wonderful World.”
The second set was both contemporary and golden age movie and musical music – “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman, “She Used to Be Mine” from Waitress, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel, and “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof.
For the final selection, my daughter and I played a medley of hymns as a harp and piano duet. It was the perfect ending to a program celebrating motherhood!
