Good Friday Service – Harp Music for Lent

Harp Music for Lent

This year, I had the privilege of providing harp music for a Good Friday service at Centenary United Methodist Church. It was a thoughtfully planned service that combined music, readings, and dramatic elements to create a deeply reflective and meaningful experience.

Good Friday services often call for music that is contemplative and emotionally resonant, and the harp is uniquely suited to that atmosphere. Its quiet, expressive tone allows it to support the service without overwhelming it, something especially important in a liturgy centered on reflection and reverence.

Harp Music for Good Friday

Prelude: “Pie Jesu” by Andrew Lloyd Webber

For the prelude, I performed “Pie Jesu” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This piece from his Requiem has a simplicity and purity that makes it particularly powerful in a sacred setting. On the harp, its flowing lines and gentle phrasing create a sense of stillness as the congregation gathers, helping to set the tone for the service.

Offertory: “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded”

For the offertory, I played the hymn “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded,” one of the most recognizable melodies associated with the Lenten season. Its historical depth and solemn character make it especially fitting for Good Friday. Arranged for harp, the melody takes on a quiet intimacy, allowing space for reflection during this moment in the service.

A Collaborative and Thoughtful Service

The service itself was beautifully layered, incorporating scripture readings, a dramatic skit, and a variety of instrumental and vocal music. In addition to harp, there were contributions featuring piano, oboe, and organ, each adding a different color and texture to the overall sound.

This kind of collaboration is one of the things I value most about performing in church settings. Each element – music, spoken word, and drama – works together to tell the story in a way that feels immersive and meaningful.

The Role of Harp in Sacred Music

Harp music has a long association with sacred and liturgical traditions, and services like this are a reminder of how effective it can be in supporting moments of reflection. Whether as a solo instrument or as part of a larger ensemble, the harp brings a sense of calm, beauty, and emotional depth that enhances the overall experience.
